I went to REI today in search of a fall-weight jacket. I now have a jacket that will do, but that I am not delighted by, so I may try another store or two next week. The new jacket's fit is OK but not great, and it's black, so it can easily get lost among all the other black coats in that closet. I also bought a pair of gloves; again not great, but I've given up on finding gloves I actually like.

My retroactive disability benefits were deposited in my bank account a couple of days ago. It's more than I expected, because I'd forgotten that the lawyer gets a percentage "or $7200, whichever is less," so instead of 25% he got about 15%.

I'm spending a bunch of time looking up different Medicare Part D (prescription drug) plans. cut for length )

My next project is to compare the available "Medicare Advantage" plans. The disadvantages of those plans are that they limit my choice of doctors, and require referrals for some doctors. Possible advantages are that I think I'd have a smaller copay per visit, that this may be the only way to get them to keep covering telemedicine appointments with my regular doctor, and one or more of those plans may cover something else I would use. Basic Medicare will stop covering telemedicine for most people at the end of 2024 (the exceptions are a few specific medical conditions I don't have, and people living in rural areas).
My Ocrevus infusion went smoothly. I got to the hospital half an hour early, partly because I woke up a bit earlier than the already early time I had set my alarm. So, I also left the house a little earlier than planned, then made very good transit connections.

This time, I asked the nurse to use my right arm for the IV, but she had trouble finding a good vein, and asked a more experienced person to set up the IV. When my right right forearm didn't work either, I told her to use the left arm, which did. She suggested trying my right hand, but there are just too many nerves there.

Since I've had these infusions several times before without problems, she ran the IV drip faster than usual. I was done with the infusion at about noon, meaning I got to leave at 1:00. I brought lunch, leftover vegetable frittata, which I ate while sitting around for them to low-key monitor me (meaning there was nobody in the room with me, but plenty of staff nearby where they would have head me if I'd called for help.

When I was done at the hospital, I took the bus a few stops, then bought a cup of tea from Flour, and drank it sitting on an Adirondack chair in Harvard Square. The chair has a plaque saying it was paid for jointly by the city of Cambridge and a group of Harvard Square businesses.

Once caffeinated, I took a bus to Penzey's in Arlington and restocked our spices. I'm a little low on whole green cardamom pods, but those are expensive enough that I'm going to wait and see if Bill Penzey decides to offer a discount on those specifically. The cashier doesn't think they've had a sale on cardamon specifically, but they have had sales on things like everything Mexican, because Trump was slandering Mexicans; a Russian seasoning blend to make the point that the problem is the Russian government, not ordinary Russians; and everything starting with F or N (because of right-wing hate speech using specific nasty slurs; so maybe Bill Penzey will decide to discount everything starting with C. More likely, I'll put cardamom on the list when I'm down to a couple of weeks' supply -- I don't use it that fast, but it was worth looking at the current price as long as I was there.

I took advantage of a CyberMonday sale to order two Sandra Boynton T-shirts from Zazzle, which refreshes my supply of non-boring T-shirts.

A lot of what's on Zazzle is copyright infringement, but when I went looking for postcards a while ago, I found Boynton's official website, and the merchandise link there leads to Zazzle. At the time, I bought some "hippopotenuse" postcards and some with a cat holding a bunch of balloons.

Today, I ordered the "Manateeshirt" and the "udderfly," which is a picture of a cow with rainbow-colored butterfly wings.

I successfully shopped for boots today! There's a shoe store in Brookline with a sign in the window saying "wide shoes," so I walked in and told a salesman that I was looking for winter boots for wide feet. He brought me a pair of boots to try on; they were too big, so I asked for a half size down, and those fit, with little foam cushions at the heels.

I couldn't quite zip the left boot over the jeans I was wearing this afternoon (I had to bunch that pants leg up a little), but the right boot did fit over my right pants leg. I already knew my left foot is larger than the right, and TIL that my calves aren't the same size either. I asked the salesman about the return policy, then bought the boots, so I could see whether I have pants that fit either in or over these boots.

The first two pairs of pants I tried this evening worked, with the pants leg over the boots rather than inside them, but they worked. That's enough for tonight, and tomorrow is soon enough to try the boots with my lined jeans.

This was the only pair of boots in the store that the salesman thought would be worth my trying on. I am very glad I asked for help immediately, rather than wasting time looking at all the boots that they didn't have in my size.

It's been years since I had a pair of boots that come partway up my calves, rather than snow sneakers.
[personal profile] cattitude found a knife store that would let us hold the knives to figure out which we wanted. We went there after lunch today, and bought two new, good kitchen knives, one that fits my hand well, and one that fits his. We have needed new/better knives for years, but we weren’t prepared to buy them online, and the first couple of stores he and [personal profile] adrian_turtle tried wouldn't let them hold the knives.

Adrian didn't buy a knife today, because gripping and lifting lots of knives made her hand hurt too badly, so she will go back another day, possibly with one of us for company, and choose one that will for her.

We also bought a new knife block, because the one Adrian had for ages fell apart on Monday.

There were two knives I considered getting. I chose the lighter one, because I think using it will be less strain on my wrist. If that hadn't been a factor, I would probably have gotten the other, but I decided to be prudent.

I went from the kitchenware store to the dentist, to have my teeth cleaned. The hygienist said my gums were in better shape than three months ago, which is good to hear.
The boots I ordered from Zappo's that were advertised as having wide calves do in fact fit around my legs. However, they are too narrow in the feet, a problem I am all too used to.

I will be sending these back, and hoping that if these boots have suitably wide calves, there are other boots out there which will fit around my calves, including some that are wide enough for my feet.

I am not surprised that these don't fit, because they came up on a search for size "8 wide," but are also described as a C width.

I have ordered an Airgami N95 mask, and a pair of boots that Zappo's says have wide enough calves for my legs.

If the mask doesn't fit me, I will try to pass it on to a friend. If the boots don't fit, I will return them for a refund.

The next thing I plan to mail-order is tea, Assam for me and lapsang souchong for [personal profile] cattitude, both of which I know we like.

ETA: The tea has been shipped, and I have ordered ten headstrap-style N95 respirators.
I've been plugging away at Duolingo French, and just passed another "castle" section-end test, which means I have access to more new lessons/topics. I'm trying not to let the way the gamification currently works keep me from making real progress: I can get 3-4 times as many points for practicing easy sections (the "legendary" level) as for new, more advanced material.

I am annoyed at (as well as puzzled by) the MBTA. Once again, it's given me the free transfer from an inbound 73 to an outbound 71, and then charged me two fares for the return trip. I'm also unhappy that when I tried adding money to my card yesterday, the bus driver made an error, so the box took my $10 bill but didn't put that money on my card. *sigh* That leaves me with a whopping 65 cents on my card, which means I will either try again to add value at the farebox, or get out the spare, take the bus to Harvard, and use the machines to add value to both cards.

The trip to Watertown was in order to shop for pine nuts, to use in the stuffing for our Thanksgiving turkey. I was looking there because we specifically want Mediterranean pine nuts, not the east Asian onces that are most of what's in stores. Neither Arax nor Sevan Bakery had pine nuts, and neither did the supermarket; I bought some raw sunflower seeds to use as a substitute. I did get sour cherry jam (for [personal profile] adrian_turtle), blueberries, chocolate baklava (not bad, but less interesting than it sounded), apple cider, and cookies (the last two from the supermarket), so that's all right.
I contacted LL Bean, via chat, to find out what I should put on the paperwork when I sent the defective jeans back for exchange. I talked to a helpful person, who answered that, and reassured me that they wouldn't charge for shipping on the return, or the replacement pair of pants. Then she offered to phone, so she could have them send me the replacement jeans now, rather than it taking two or three weeks if I just shipped it back for replacement.

I thought about that for a moment, then said yes, warning her that there was a chance that I'd disappear suddenly, because I was waiting for a call back from my doctor.

My doctor did not call back, then or at any point today -- I'm still trying to find out what results of the blood tests the neurologist had them do ten days ago mean -- but everything else seems to have gone smoothly. After confirming the last four digits, and expiration date, of the credit card I'd used, she's charging for a new pair, which will be credited back to the credit card when LL Bean gets the first pair back.

It was a beautiful afternoon to be out and about for a bit -- a ridiculously warm 73 F (23 C) and sunny. Also, I saw a sign in the UPS store, listing "notarizing" as one of their services. I asked, and there's a notary there basically whenever the store is open; I also checked that they'll be open the day after Thanksgiving. (I need notarized copies of my mother's birth certificate and naturalization certificate, and my parents' marriage license, for German citizenship. [boring details redacted]) So I am feeling accomplished.

OK, this is just weird: I ordered two pairs of jeans from LL Bean, both the same size and style, but in different shades of blue. One pair fits, and the other has a defective buttonhole, so I'll be returning it. They sewed the buttonhole too tight: I can fasten it with only a little trouble, but unfastening it was difficult.

These are to replace a pair of jeans that wore out, and one that I expect to wear out in the next few months, so I was expecting them to fit, unless the manufacturer decided to change the size numbering. The pair with a properly-made buttonhole does fit, so I have removed the tags and thrown them into the laundry basket.
I ran out of executive function about 5:30 (though a cup of tea was restorative) and was thinking that I hadn't done much today.

Then I started inventorying things out loud:
  • ordered a new pair of walking shoes. This involved calling both local REI storeto see if they had the shoes I wanted in stock. Neither did, and when I looked at the REI website I saw that REI doesn't carry the size I need, so I ordered from Zappo's/Amazon
  • proofread an article for Queue
  • a bunch of PT exercises, including upper-body exercises I hadn't done in more than a week
  • had my Ritalin delivered, which was easy because I'm now getting it from Capsule pharmacy, which texts to let me know when it's time to (re)fill a prescription
  • rescheduled a doctor's appointment: the doctor's office called to say she's going to be out of the office for November and December, and offered the choice of rescheduling in January, or seeing a different doctor sooner.
  • dishes, including washing the big frying pan twice, once so @cattitude could make pasta sauce, and the second time so he could cook dumplings for tonight's dinner
  • looked something up online for my mother

I went to DSW this afternoon in search of sneakers, and found a pair that I think fits. "I think" because it's hard to tell much in a few minutes in the store, but the return policy is "within sixty days, as long as you haven't worn them outside."

What I found are New Balance men's size 8; part of why I went to DSW is that I wanted someplace where I wouldn't have to argue with the staff about the gender of my shoes. Before finding these, I tried two other pairs of New Balance sneakers in the same size.

If these fit well, I will look for another pair in a color I like better. These are part white, and part a sort of light gray-green, which isn't what I would have chosen, but it was the only pair they had out in that model and size.

I stopped on the way home at Lizzy's, and got a chocolate orgy cone, and two pints (strawberry and chocolate) for the freezer.

I decided a few months ago that I wanted to buy a new parka early in the winter coat shopping season, while there was plenty of choice. So I went out to LL Bean this morning. The trip is bus to subway to bus, or three buses, but straightforward except for the unexpected wait for the 73 bus.

I found a helpful saleswoman, and told her that I wanted a parka, with a hood and pockets, for dealing with a Boston winter. She brought me a few things to try; I liked one, and asked if they had other colors than brick red. Happily, they do and it wasn't in stock in Burlington, so they are shipping it to me, and I didn't have to schlep a heavy coat around on my way home. I also bought a bag of chocolate covered blueberries, and three pairs of socks, having noticed that SmartWool is making solid-colored socks again.

After shopping at LL Bean, I took the bus to Arlington Center, where I had lunch and then a cup of tea. The staff at Caffe Nero were friendly and helpful: when I pulled out my paper Caffe Nero card, with eight stamps out of nine, and asked if they were still taking those, she said yes, and gave me my tea for free, rather than charging me for it and handing me a fully stamped card.

Looking around while I waited for my tea to steep, I was thinking "this is why we're not dining inside restaurants right now": lots of people who had settled in, unmasked, with laptops, and at least one making a phone call. But I sat outside to drink my tea, took a short bus trip to East Arlington to buy coffee for [personal profile] cattitude, and then home. Amusingly, I got the roughly monthly email about the MBTA customer survey while I was on the 350 bus, so my "most recent trip" was one I almost never take, Burlington to Belmont with two stops in Arlington.
[personal profile] cattitude and I took the bus to Harvard Square, where we got pizza for lunch at &pizza because it's convenient and has outdoor tables. The set-up there is that you can put as few or as many toppings on your pizza at a fixed price (rather than paying per topping). I saw that I could have a fig and balsamic vinegar drizzle added after cooking, so I tried from memory to recreate something I used to get at Mod Pizza when we lived in Bellevue. It wasn't bad, but I should have asked for more basil than the person put on at first, and maybe omitted the cooked onions instead of asking for extras of those. I think what I was getting at Mod was tomato, mozzarella, basil, and mushroom, and then the balsamic drizzle, but this really isn't a good summer for tomatoes.

From there, we went to Central Square, for the farmers market and H-Mart. I also wanted to go to Target and look at socks, but there was nothing there I really liked (it's a small Target, but I keep not getting to the one at Porter Square).

We bought some produce, along with conversation like "oh, I still have some plums from last week" and whether to buy a tiny orange or purple cauliflower: cattitude sensibly pointed out that we shouldn't get both that and the cabbage, and he has plans for the cabbage. Tasty plans. What we did get was a few yellow plums, a half-pint of raspberries, a cucumber, a cabbage, and two Puritan apples to see if we liked them. I couldn't get Evernote to show me my "apple list" note the note with my apple; now that I'm home, I see that we had tried it before and been unimpressed, but I am usually unimpressed by early-season apples. But we have them, and I will eat one, because maybe this year's crop is better.

We got another loaf of the Luce bread from Hi-Rise, and seeing their display reminded me that I hadn't finished the lemon curd cake I got last week. So I had that with my afternoon tea when I got home; in a zip-lock, it was still good after a week, though a little drier than when fresh. At H-mart, we bought cherries, pork-and-leek dumplings, and a quart of milk.

Thence, Cattitude went to Davis Square to pick up a prescription at the CVS there, and I went to Harvard Square to buy ice cream, and then home via the CVS nearest our house, to pick up my prescription. The timing worked out that Cattitude and I got to 73 the bus stop at the same time, so he came with me to the drugstore.

That was a lot of walking, possibly too much, even though I took a naproxen before we set out. But I don't have to go anywhere tomorrow, or Wednesday, hHaving postponed my dental appointment.
A few days ago, I tried ordering New Balance sneakers from Zappo's; they arrived the following day, but aren't even close to fitting.

So, this morning I went back to Marathon Sports, and asked if they had a record of the order I'd placed and cancelled in April, so I could save time. They looked it up using my phone number, and the employee said it was a Brooks Adrenalin size 8 and a half.

I told her at this point I don't care about color, and she brought me a pair in boring gray and white. I tried it on, it was a little snug, and she went and got the 8.5 wide. That fit, as far as I could tell in a few minutes in the store, so I bought it and came home. I asked about other colors, and while the company makes them, Marathon Sports doesn't carry those, so if I ordered through them it would be final sale. I said thanks anyway, I'd wait a few days and see how well they fit. If I do order another color, it will be through Zappo's, because they do allow returns and online shopping is more convenient than going to the store to order something for delivery.

On the way home, I stopped at the stationer in Harvard Square (Bob Slade), and discovered that they had sold out of the reusable shopping bags we like, and can't get more. So I bought a few pens and came home.

It's a hot day, but not unbearable for a short while, so I went into the garden and harvested enough lettuce for one last home-grown salad. There are about enough leaves left on the plants to put on a sandwich or two, but I wasn't expecting to still be harvesting lettuce on July 15. The cucumber plants have a few small fruit, and I'm hoping to be able to pick one in the next week or two. I thought I'd seen two tiny tomatoes on the cherry tomato plant a few days ago, but didn't see them yesterday.

I hope this means I overlooked something, and not that the squirrel is going to eat them all. As far as I can tell, neither the local squirrel(s) nor rabbits are interested in lettuce, and they don't seem to be interested in cucumbers, but the squirrel keeps biting off the flowers or just-forming fruit on the few strawberries that survived the winter.
This afternoon, I went to Pemberton Farms and bought planting containers, then came home and transplanted little cucumber and salad green seedlings.

I will need to go back and buy more planters: there wasn't room in these planters for all the salad mix and cucumber seedlings I have now, and I'll need containers for the cucumbers and tomatoes I mail-ordered last fall, when I didn't want to count on being able to get to the garden center this spring. (I needed three planters, bought two, and now need two or three.)

I bought two six-packs of seedlings from Pemberton Farms last week, and transplanted the lettuce into the containers I already had from last year. They're all flourishing, which makes me happy.
I just took my fully-vaccinated self to the grocery store, to get a few things before [personal profile] adrian_turtle gets here (I'm taking care of both her and [personal profile] cattitude after their second vaccine doses).

The Star Market in my part of Belmont has one-way arrows on the aisles, and frequent announcements over the PA telling us to follow the one-way signs. So I did, and I was passed at least three times by store employees going the other way. I was annoyed enough to go to the customer service desk after checking out, and ask them to either have their staff follow the one-way instructions, or stop nagging shoppers about it over the PA.

This afternoon, I went to Davis Square and bought a chicken and some frozen ground lamb, then walked a few blocks to Mass Ave. and bought some lettuce plants for my garden. That's two stores I hadn't been to in over a year, MscKinnon's and Pemberton Farms, which were both basically as I remembered, and I will be able to roast a chicken for [personal profile] cattitude and [personal profile] adrian_turtle while they're recovering from their second vaccine doses.

I wanted to do my own shopping for the chicken, rather than chance an Instacart shopper picking something that needed to be used right away. The original plan had been to go to Star Market, which is closer, but some of their delivery drivers are on strike, and shoppimg there right now would feel wrong even without a physical picket line. So, bus and subway to Davis, rather than just a shorter bus trip. The advantage of this is that uncrowded subway trains let me do a bit of balance practice, which isn't formally PT but which the physical trainer I was working with for a while agreed was useful as a balance exercise. (When I was 15, standing on a moving train without holding on was just for fun.)

Mostly this trip felt refreshingly normal, though passing through the Harvard Square subway station and seeing almost nobody in the normally crowded area between the escalators and the turnstiles, fare vending machines, and busway was weird.

The landlord texted us a week ago to ask if we wanted to renew; we replied with "if the rent is the same, definitely." It sat there for a week, and then I texted him again, to ask him to send us the renewal lease.

In reply, he said that the last two years had been costly, and he's raising the rent by $50/month, do we still want to renew? I wrote back to accept, then decided that between that and doing a bit of tax-related arithmetic for my mother, I had earned a reward.

So, despite the rain, I took a bus to Watertown and bought chocolate (at the place I'd checked out a couple of weeks ago), and then went to Sophia's Greek Pantry (which is appropriately named( and "Super Vanak," which has Mediterranean and south Asian foods. We now have pita, taramasalata, and olives; this was more exploration than grocery shopping, so I didn't get yogurt, cheese, nuts, or spices. Things to consider getting include dried shallots, curls of dried orange peel, and dried celery leaves, as well as more common things like pistachios.
I placed a spice order with Penzey's yesterday morning. I got an email acknowledgement, which said that it would probably ship in 3-5 days, and click here if you want to change or cancel the order.

Later that day, I remembered that we wanted to order mustard (powdered), so I emailed and asked if I could do that. The response was that my order had already been packed for shipping, and they can create another order and waive the shipping, if I liked.

I said yes, and gave the gift card number and PIN again. I bought a $50 gift card for $35 a couple of months ago, and this order cost more than $35, so I'm into the effectively free spices. The company was encouraging people to buy gift cards for themselves. Yes, it's a short-term loan to them, but since I was confident I'd use it, it's effectively a very good interest rate, unlike the money I have on transit fare cards (including an ORCA, from when we lived in Seattle, which I will probably never use) and a Starbucks card.
