This afternoon I finished editing the book I was working on and sent it back to the client (JM). He called a little while ago, and thanked me for finishing early, and generally for doing a good job. (This was a final polishing pass on the whole book, after he looked at the individual edited chapters and accepted most of the changes, so "good job" isn't based just on getting it in before the deadline.) JM volunteered that he'll recommend me to everyone he knows who needs an editor, and I might have more work than I could handle; this is a risk I am prepared to take.

I'm going to Montreal from the weekend; next week I can focus more on move-related things, like more unpacking and changing the address on my state ID card and registering to vote in Belmont. That's the last major thing on the COA/move list, since I called the oil company this morning and put that bill in my name.
No, I haven't been incredibly busy today; this post combines stuff from the last week or more.

This afternoon I went to a low-key party at my friend Lori's house, where I talked to her, [personal profile] adrian_turtle, and a variety of people I didn't know, or knew vaguely but couldn't remember their names. In and around the conversation, I ate grilled corn, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, pineapple, rutabaga, and a bit of steak. (The party is outdoors, and I had RSVP'd as "weather allowing," not expecting that it would, but we lucked out, this being one cool-enough day in a string of hot to very hot ones.)

Yesterday I finished editing another chapter of the book I'm working on, and sent it to the client (who thinks I'm great). The day before, I started on a different (small) editorial project. I'm doing two passes on each book chapter, and wanted to take a couple of days between them, hence interleaving this. The other project is going more slowly, in part because it's proofreading as well as copyeditingg, and the document is already in PDF format. This is my second project for this client; having clients want to hire me again feels good, whatever the size of the job. This one is small, or I wouldn't have taken it on while preparing to move.

I called both Belmont Light and National Grid to put the apartment utilities in our name about a week ago. both were straightforward until the end of the call, at which point the Belmont Light person told me that I need to come to their office in person within ten business days to show her photo ID. And they're open 8-4 weekdays, except they close at 11 a.m. on Friday in the summer. If I had any sort of job with regular hours, this would be annoying if not worse; as it is, I expect it to be a minor nuisance, and in return I don't have to deal with Eversource, and National Grid only for natural gas (for the stove). So that's what I'm doing tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, [personal profile] cattitude spent a bunch at the new apartment, measuring the rooms in detail so we can figure out how we want to arrange the apartment. He did this for the last two moves, and we still have the little bits of paper that represent our desks, couch, bed, table, chairs.... He's going to measure the basement, and make more detailed measurements of the windows that we want to put air conditioners in, while I'm talking to Belmont Light.

About an hour ago I filed my first change of address, with the post office. After I post this I will check it off the (electronic) list.

(We hired a moving company last month, and the friend who was so helpful when I was having the cataract surgery has agreed to drive the cats, and probably one of us, from Arlington to Belmont on the day.)

I realized a few hours ago that it felt as though I had gotten a lot done today. Thinking about it, that's a combination of having spent most of the late morning and afternoon on those things, and I think that I did several things, in chunks large enough to feel like they count, yet small enough that none of them used the whole day, or even half of it.

Putting the electricity and natural gas for our new apartment into my name is two significant useful tasks done; it took maybe ten minutes, counting the time to write a reminder to take a photo ID to the Belmont Light office, and note their summer hours, closing early on Fridays. I like the idea of getting my electricity from a municipally owned utility, rather than Eversource or National Grid (or Puget Sound Energy, Consolidated Edison, or Northeast Utilities), even though this is also the first time I haven't been able to set up electrical service over the phone. (It's two tasks because having a gas stove means we will also be doing business with National Grid.)

Getting my hair cut didn't take very long, since I just told Taylor to do the same fairly simple thing as last time. Neither did going to the Davis Square farmers market after lunch, but I came home with strawberries, cucumbers, a Boston lettuce, and smoked fish pate, so that definitely feels like something accomplished.

Before all this, and after it, I finished editing and sent back another chapter of the book I'm working on.

And I did several of my PT-related exercises (and crunches, which aren't really part of my shoulder, hip, or knee physical therapy homework/maintenance, though the therapists I saw for the hip and knee were in favor of them).
We are making some progress toward unpacking the kitchen, and deciding where things go. Today was pots and pans, and the nesting pyrex mixing bowls. we'd already found places for (some of the) mugs, plates, bowls, knives, and silverware.

last night i cooked a meal that came out well, not merely "yes it's food": not something complicated, but a slight variation on what i usually do with ground lamb. and the rice came out well, which means i'm starting to understand the stove.
I have done some of my exercises:

The first box I unpacked today was labeled "[personal profile] redbird desk files." It also had the other stuff from the shelves under my desk, including my exercise elastics, so I have done those exercises. (The serratus pushups I did yesterday, because all I need for those is a bit of bare wall to lean on.)

Then I made us lunch. Just matzo meal latkes, and I'm still figuring out this stove, but now I have cooked here. We have made tea, assembled sandwiches, had a couple of hot meals delivered, and eaten yogurt, fresh fruit, and random snacks, but we hadn't cooked in the last few days, unsurprisingly. I also made coffee (for [personal profile] cattitude) this morning, the first time we've done that since the move. He can drink tea, and grabbing a Lapsang souchong teabag is easier than getting out the coffee beans, Melitta cone, and filter, grinding the beans, and then pouring them into the filter cone. But this is also part of making this feel like home.

[personal profile] anne came over this afternoon, mostly to socialize but also because I wanted to give her a winter coat that doesn't fit me.

She got here around two, and [personal profile] adrian_turtle, [personal profile] cattitude, and I went downstairs with a pinhole camera. We chatted with a few neighbors who were also looking at, or for, the partial solar eclipse*; then snacked on cherry tomatoes fresh off the vine before going to the back yard to look at tree shadows. The leaves were close enough together that we didn't get very good crescent shadows; the pinhole camera placed on a table was better. The sunlight on Adrian's straw hat created tiny crescents on her face, a cool effect that the camera didn't pick up (meaning she didn't get to see it).

We went inside a bit after maximum eclipse and socialized a little longer; Anne left so she wouldn't be going through Downtown Crossing at the height of the rush hour, and we did some more moving-related stuff.

*I think the maximum here was about 62%.

We have reached a significant milestone: we have unpacked all the boxes except the book-sized boxes. That includes unpacking most if not all of our clothes, pots and pans, dishes, and such food as we brought with us (mostly spices and tea), and getting all the boxes out of our bedroom.

We still have a lot to do: those "book" boxes include a few with labels like "CDs," and somewhere in one of them is my backup drive. (I have grabbed another old drive for backups, but that means Time Machine is starting from scratch, and has to reformat the drive.) The next step is re-assembling bookshelves (putting the movable shelves back in).

We also have a couple of boxes of clothes to donate to a thrift store, things that no longer fit, or never quite fit, or that we just noticed we don't like and weren't wearing, and that are in good enough condition that a thrift store might want them. (Local friends, ping me if you're interested: mostly it's women's sizes 14, 16 and 18.)

The progress in unpacking made it easier and more congenial to have [personal profile] adrian_turtle here for dinner last night (this was planned; last time was impromptu, after she asked if she could borrow an egg).

I have also started getting books from the library, which the cats approve of because it means I sit in the recliner and read, and they can sit on my lap (Molly) or lean against my chest (Kaja). Yes, we own a lot of books; as of this morning exactly one of them was not sealed in a cardboard box.

(There was something else I wanted to say, and if I remember what it was I will do a separate post.)

[personal profile] cattitude has ascertained that the requirements for a Massachusetts driver's license or non-driver ID include a social security card. I have been keeping mine in a jewellery* box, the kind with a little lock on the front (which I haven't used for jewellery in years, because it's not suited to the kind of earrings I wear). The people who did our packing locked the box, and either the key is in some other random box, or it's locked into this one.

I am considering whether to try picking the lock, or use a box-cutter: I don't actually need a jewellery box to store my social security card and a few credit-card-sized plastic rectangles.

The unpacking is also involving a certain amount of "I forgot I had this," along with trying things on to see if they still fit.

Other than that, I have been exercising, doing some freelance work, wrestling with my credit union's phone app (it's ahead, 2-0), and spending time with [personal profile] adrian_turtle. Cattitude and I have been enjoying the mild early spring, and right now I'm hoping the forecast snow doesn't kill the blossoms on the cherry tree around the corner. (I expect the forsythia and periwinkle, of which there are a lot in this neighborhood, will be fine.)

*Firefox wants this spelling, flags "jewelry" as an error.)

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] ckd took a look at the webpage, and apparently they just need to be able to verify the number.
I and [personal profile] cattitude have now each cooked a couple of meals in the new apartment, though we're still figuring out things like oven temperature. We're pretty well stocked on basic things to eat, drink, and cook with, some of them (like all the spices and a lot of tea) brought from the old place, and others (including milk, olive oil, and flour) bought here. I also bought horseradish this afternoon, just because I could—the best I could do in Bellevue was a horseradish-and-stuff spread, and now I have a jar of Gold's horseradish. We also have proper seltzer and a few Macintosh apples.

Almost everything is in boxes, but my computer is on my desk as I type this, [personal profile] cattitude is running laundry so we can put sheets on the bed for tonight, and the cats are happily exploring.

I have two freelance assignments due in the next couple of weeks, so I am going to be busy, and I suspect Cattitude is going to get to do more of the unpacking than me this time. (Last time he was working full-time at Microsoft, so I did more.)
There is at least one restaurant where I can eat the hot and sour soup.

We went to Little Q Hot Pot yesterday, because we needed lunch before the internet installer got to our new apartment, and the restaurant is right at Mass Ave. The lunch specials come with soup, and instead of asking what we wanted, the server just brought two cups of hot and sour soup. I tasted it, cautiously, and liked it. A little more, and a little more, and I ate the whole thing: it was mostly sour and not very hot. I wound up eating Cattitude's as well; the soup was full of tiny mushrooms, so not suited for him.

The installer turned up in good time, so we have internet; we also got the rug pads cut and the rugs laid down. Now we have to decide by Monday morning what furniture goes where.

Yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] cattitude and I spent some time measuring rooms in the new apartment, and then he took a bunch of photos, and I went to [personal profile] adrian_turtle's place. Cattitude and I had falafel for lunch, at a place in Davis Square that he liked as much as I'd hoped, and Adrian and I made black beans and rice for dinner, which was what I wanted after several days of rich/heavy restaurant food. Today we went rug shopping; the store will be delivering two rugs tomorrow morning, so we can get them in place before the furniture arrives. Adrian very kindly offered to be there at 10 for the delivery, so we don't have to get up incredibly early (she lives ten minutes away, and it's more than an hour from our hotel).

I did some exercise before dinner today, after several days of almost nothing (some walking, and too much standing while they were packing our old place, but none of my weight/resistance stuff), and we had a surprisingly good dinner at a kebab place with the unlikely name "Moby Dick of Boston." One of today's specials was chicken with sour cherries, which sounded interesting and good, and turned out to be excellent, a huge amount of basmati rice with shredded chicken and a not-too-sweet cherry sauce.

The cats are coping with the situation.
[livejournal.com profile] cattitude and I went to Arlington this afternoon, so he could see the place and we could measure things in detail and start planning what to put where.

He agrees that it is a good place, and I am relieved: he agreed to let me decide this, but I was worried that it would be closer to "okay, it will do" than "thank you, you found a good place." Getting all of our furniture in may be tricky: not just what to put in which room, but large items and narrow doorways. But we shall persevere. He is staring at his diagrams while I type this. I expected him to like the sun room, but it turns out that he is at least as pleased with the porch. (The porch isn't usable in really cold weather or at night, since it lacks both insulation and lighting/electricity, but it's a nice bit of space and fits his expectations for a porch.

As part of the ongoing "make [personal profile] redbird and Cattitude's move easier" project, [personal profile] adrian_turtle left us a tea kettle, some sugar, and a few other useful things in the apartment.

Also, we saw crocuses and robins, which qualifies this as the beginning of spring by Cattitude's definitions. (We're getting two springs this year, because of when we moved, but I thought we might be dropped back into winter first.)

We are both quite worn out, from packing to move and the trip across the country. I think we managed a balance of getting enough done and not overdoing things too much physically. My feet feel as though I walked too much today, but I think that's mostly left over from standing too much Wednesday and Thursday.

We landed at Logan at about 5 this morning; the cats arrived a few hours later. We are here, in a hotel room for a bit while our stuff travels by truck, but [personal profile] adrian_turtle came over here and handed us the keys, and had dinner with us. The cats seem okay; they are spending a bunch of time under the bed, but they do that at home, too.

We are way behind on sleep (having been underslept even before the red-eye flight) so just this brief update for now.

Mostly things are going well: in particular, the cats have passed their pre-flight physicals, and we have the detailed plans for cat moving.

However, in looking at the latest email from the moving company, I noticed that the stated dates for when the moving truck will arrive didn't match what we had thought, and have been planning based on. We looked at the previous emails etc., and those are in fact the dates they gave us all along. There is one day overlap: either way, it's possible the truck will be getting there on the 19th. If it's not until the 20th or 21st, we will cope. We have the apartment in plenty of time (the landlord has already given the keys to [personal profile] adrian_turtle on our behalf, and she is talking about dropping off a tea kettle and other useful objects before we arrive).

This does have the advantage that [livejournal.com profile] cattitude and I can make plans involving Vericon. There are people I want to see ([livejournal.com profile] rysmiel and I had reached a state of "we'll squeeze in a bit of time once I hear from the moving company" that doesn't fit well with their dislike of last-minute arrangements), and some interesting-sounding programming. (The con dates are March 18-20, which is when we thought the moving truck was due.)

ETA: Vericon dates corrected, thank you Geri.

I have now booked both the cats' trip from here to Boston (we're having professionals transport them for us) and our tickets. Both on red-eye flights, which the cats probably won't mind. We already have the moving truck booked. There are still fiddly bits, of course, and stuff to do once we get to Boston, but that's the essentials out of the way.

[livejournal.com profile] cattitude, [livejournal.com profile] julian_tiger, and I have moved out of the temporary housing. Julian didn't appreciate being put into a carrier, but he wasn't there long and perked right up when we let him out at this end (about half a mile away). There's still significant clutter, but we are making progress on the boxes. At the same time, having everything in one place means that if I want to cook, I have all my spices (except the ones that need replacing because of age), plus things like rice, olive oil, and varied teas. I am typing this in my temporary desk space—it's a real desk, but inconveniently small, and we'd been using it as a printer stand—with a number of things that will be on my desk when I get a new one in sight on a nearby bookcase.

[livejournal.com profile] roadnotes visited us for tea and conversation this afternoon, before we went to get Julian and the last of our stuff. We are all here, and have had company, and it feels a lot more like a home and a lot less like a shipping depot.

I haven't done much reading lately, because until a few days ago all my books were in boxes, and I was between library cards. Having unpacked one bookshelf worth (miscellaneous) and gotten a King County library card, I've done a bit of rereading: Changing Planes by Ursula Le Guin (from the library) and The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett (our very own copy), both of which stood up well.
Today was annoying: I spent the entire day sitting in the new apartment waiting for Comcast to show up and set up our internet and landline. They never turned up; at about a quarter to 7 [livejournal.com profile] cattitude got there, and suggested we plug a phone in and see if there was a dialtone. There was. Yes, this is better than having been there all day and not having phone service at the end, but it's still annoying. Nor do I know whether we have internet (the router is in one of the boxes we have not yet unpacked).

I did get a lot more unpacking done, which is good. I also noticed something amusing and potentially useful. The view out our window includes a couple of glass-sided skyscrapers, meaning that I can get bright sunlight in the afternoon through our east-facing windows. We had a bit of that effect back in Inwood, but this seems an order of magnitude brighter than the reflection off the windows across the parking lot. The new thing here is that the reflection shows me the sky to the southwest, and thus gives me an idea of what weather to expect in a couple of hours. The reflection of blue sky with puffy white clouds, in front of the dark gray overcast, was also pretty.

I have tried a new apple, Pacific Rose, which I found at the supermarket yesterday. The name suggests it's relatively local and possibly suited to the climate (though of course "Pacific" could refer to Chile, Japan, or New Zealand). It's crisp and juicy, and only mildly flavored, with a bit of sweetness, a bit of apple-ness, and no noticeable tartness. I'd guess (from appearance as well as taste) that it's related to Gala.

( Apr. 12th, 2013 07:52 pm)
Our stuff is now off the truck and in the new apartment. There are too many boxes, to the point where we won't be able to pursue the original plan of culling and alphabetizing books as we unpack. Some of the "too many boxes" is that the packers used a lot of paper around some of the stuff, but I suspect the book boxes are entirely full of books.

My desk didn't survive the move (we thought it might not—it was 20 years old and made of particleboard), and the armoire was damaged. That should be repairable iff Ikea still makes that model and the part is available, but in the meantime it is lying on its side, making the bedroom seem more crowded, rather than being a place I can unpack clothes into. However, my dresser (which has sentimental value as well as being useful) and the nested Pyrex bowls (ditto) survived, and those would have been a lot harder to replace.

We are also going to have to throw away a variety of stuff that we either didn't get the chance to sort through, or that the packers put in boxes or on the truck before we could say "no, leave that." (The annoyance there is a broken table that I did explicitly tell them not to pack.) There are other bits of furniture we may conclude we don't need (or don't have room for), but couldn't know that until we got here and started arranging things.
