No tropical storms have formed in the Atlantic Ocean this month. (Yes, I know there are eleven hours to go, but the National Hurricane Center doesn't expect anything at the instant.)
That's a good point, though I'm not sure how much to read into short-term variation, nor have I looked at data for previous Octobers. (The meteorologists who looked at the 2005 hurricane season wound up unable to reach consensus on whether it meant anything longer term, in part because the total number of storms for 2005 was about the historical average: there were record numbers in the North Atlantic, and fewer than usual in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. [I don't think the Southern Ocean generates tropical cyclones.])
