[Poll #548232]

This is me being annoyed by the newspaper features section. Specifically, an article, listed as "fashion", which asked a bunch of celebrities to name the one garment, item of jewelry, or accessory that they valued much.
That in itself is just fluff, about what you'd expect from that section, in August. What annoyed me is that it was splashed, on the front page of said section--which I save for exercise bicycle reading, since it's lightweight and about the right length--as "Every woman has one thing that she values most." Rather than look at these and think "I must not be a woman," I find myself thinking "what color is the sky on your planet?" I suspect that in an open-ended "what do you value most?" more women would say "security" or "my children" or "that half hour in the morning before anyone else gets up" or "my hope of salvation" than would name a pair of pearl earrings or a particular dress.

If you look at it right, with proper blinders on, and squint.
Then again, even if limited to purely material things (and excluding "my computer and the data on it" as a special case), I'm sufficiently indecisive that I still don't have anything that I reliably value "most" -- there are lots of things that I value a lot, and if you took one I'd cry and I'd be very angry and I'd survive, and if you told me I had to pick only one to keep I'd consider it an absurd hypothetical situation and refuse to play the game.
But, then, I'm not a woman, so maybe this is all completely irrelevant. Though somehow I doubt it. :)

When I answer "the family I've made for myself," that includes the things that make us us, the things we value and work for together.
I couldn't even choose a One True Shirt. But I am not big on One True.

Of course, I don't even have a favorite pair of earrings, though I have quite a few pairs of earrings I'm fond of.

Those must be the women who make sure they are perfectly made up before stepping out the door. My son ate my last lipstick two years ago.

I could tell you that I value my mind. Or my cats. Or my family.

The inanimate object I value the most right now is my instrument collection...or maybe my music collection...or maybe...
