A poll

[Poll #548232]

Please answer the poll before clicking on the cut or reading comments.

This is me being annoyed by the newspaper features section. Specifically, an article, listed as "fashion", which asked a bunch of celebrities to name the one garment, item of jewelry, or accessory that they valued much.

That in itself is just fluff, about what you'd expect from that section, in August. What annoyed me is that it was splashed, on the front page of said section--which I save for exercise bicycle reading, since it's lightweight and about the right length--as "Every woman has one thing that she values most." Rather than look at these and think "I must not be a woman," I find myself thinking "what color is the sky on your planet?" I suspect that in an open-ended "what do you value most?" more women would say "security" or "my children" or "that half hour in the morning before anyone else gets up" or "my hope of salvation" than would name a pair of pearl earrings or a particular dress.

Well, in a slight defense, "one thing" does sort of imply material things, and then "most" implies merely "most among material things".

If you look at it right, with proper blinders on, and squint.

Then again, even if limited to purely material things (and excluding "my computer and the data on it" as a special case), I'm sufficiently indecisive that I still don't have anything that I reliably value "most" -- there are lots of things that I value a lot, and if you took one I'd cry and I'd be very angry and I'd survive, and if you told me I had to pick only one to keep I'd consider it an absurd hypothetical situation and refuse to play the game.

But, then, I'm not a woman, so maybe this is all completely irrelevant. Though somehow I doubt it. :)

Limiting it to physical objects makes it harder, not easier, because I can't come up with a broad umbrella (weasel) term.

When I answer "the family I've made for myself," that includes the things that make us us, the things we value and work for together.

I couldn't even choose a One True Shirt. But I am not big on One True.

[livejournal.com profile] elisem and [livejournal.com profile] porphyrin have made it impossible for me to have one favorite pair of earrings any more. Bad, bad influences....

How's this for a weasel term: My Library. (Given the holdings of most public libraries, that could be construed to include all printed matter in the house, all movies (DVD and VHS) and all audio recordings (cassette, CD, and MP3 - I don't own any records).) That's an awful lot to call the *thing* I value, but it is a singular noun. Just a very *broad* one.

I have to wonder about people like that. My first thought was my kids, and if I have to stick to a thing, I'd go with my dog, if one can count pets as things, and if not, my teddy bear or my copy of Magic In My Pocket rate so far beyond any piece of jewelry or clothing I own that it isn't even funny.

Those must be the women who make sure they are perfectly made up before stepping out the door. My son ate my last lipstick two years ago.

I couldn't begin to tell you what garment / item of jewelry / accessory I valued more than the others. If I knew that, I would have a lot less clutter.

I could tell you that I value my mind. Or my cats. Or my family.

I have a favorite pair of earrings. (I'm a woman, double-you oh em ay en...)

The inanimate object I value the most right now is my instrument collection...or maybe my music collection...or maybe...

But to be fair, I do have one item of jewellery I value above all the others; the labradorite necklace I wore to the Hugos.
