This past night, I kept sleeping in about one-hour chunks. At least three times, I woke up with my left hand feeling both in pain and not wanting to move properly. A minute of flexing things anyway fixed it, but this is weird as well as annoying. I had been sleeping with a stuffed animal tucked under that arm, as I often do; after the second time I woke up that way, I moved it aside. No good, an hour later the same thing, except sans panda. So I grabbed the panda again, because having her does help me sleep.

This last time, my back was also uncomfortable. So I've gotten up for a bit, and will either go back to sleep soon or have some tea, depending in part on whether [livejournal.com profile] cattitude wakes up. Seven isn't an unreasonable hour for someone who went to bed at 11:00 to get up. But it doesn't feel like enough sleep, with all those interruptions and my not being well yet.

And yes, I was careful about the caffeine yesterday, and I took my pre-bed valerian.

I made chocolate French toast for lunch today. It seemed like it might tempt me (still working on regaining appetite post-surgery) and [livejournal.com profile] cattitude (who has a cold). That it did. It was quite rich, enough so that Cattitude said he thought there might be too much chocolate in the bread, which takes some doing. I wouldn't want this very often—it's one of those things that feels like eating dessert for lunch—but it was very nice.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mrissa for the idea, and [livejournal.com profile] papersky for encouraging me to buy the chocolate bread at Premier Moisson last month: when I got home from Montreal, I froze five slices, which turned out to be enough for French toast for two not ridiculously hungry people, and just fit in our large frying pan. (Five slices because that's what fit in one quart freezer bag.)

This also goes under signs of recovery: it's the first meal I've made for both of us, and only the second that feels like real cooking, since I got home from the hospital. (Canned soup doesn't count, even if I add some cooked chicken and dried chives.)

Even when I schedule rest days, I have a hard time allowing myself to do nothing. I wind up, late on a Saturday, saying "at least I made lunch/took out the trash/paid some bills." Recovering from surgery, I can cut myself slack on the days when I'd have to fill in "drank tea" in that slot, or at best "made myself tea while [livejournal.com profile] cattitude was at work.

I don't know whether this will carry over when I'm well but really need a rest day to maintain that.

I also note that I have posted this only at a point when I have started doing stuff beyond the basic self-maintenance.

Since I'm still recovering from surgery, [livejournal.com profile] roadnotes came up here for the afternoon. We drank tea and talked: life and relationships, past and present. Much missed: we keep up by LJ and IM, but we need to actually sit down in the same place fairly often. [livejournal.com profile] cattitude was part of the beginning and end of the conversation, with a nap in the middle.

In the course of the conversation, I'd asked Roadnotes if she felt up to trying to reinsert my captive bead earring. She said she didn't think so. I slipped the ring in anyhow, to encourage the piercing not to close, figuring I'd just leave it there until we went out. A few minutes later, I started fiddling with the bead, and got it to slip into the right position. So that's one task out of the way.

Another piece of good news is that the local tapwater no longer tastes flat or weird.

At the end of the afternoon, we walked her part of the way to the subway; this isn't quite the longest walk I've done since getting home, but Cattitude was still tired. (He's been pushing himself hard the last fortnight, taking care of me.) There are lilacs, still, and paulownia, and a general and impressive green.
