This is a cardinal that is half-male, half-female (vertically divided). Via [livejournal.com profile] beetiger. The technical term seems to be gynandromorph. I'm assuming it's sterile, but haven't done any reading, just followed the link to the image

I'm sorry! I meant to say, "I am enlightened!" but my translator somehow got the interrogative particle from the next sentence stuck on the first one too.)

Yep, this is one of the more common forms of hemaphroditism (in the biological sense), and also occurs in humans. One gonad becomes an ovary, the other a testicle.

Oh, awesome! I've never seen that in a species where the sex differences are so clear!

Wow, awesome! Thank you so much!

I can't click through to the image, and I'd love to be able to refer to it in future.

Copying the image address and pasting it in the URL bar seems to work, but it looks like [livejournal.com profile] redbird's icon is just as good -- the full image is no higher resolution; it just has more leaves around the outside of the image.

It's a good thing we haven't had any like that because I usually tell the cats "There's a mommy cardinal!" "There's a daddy cardinal!"
