I have no medical details, but [livejournal.com profile] baldanders is doing well enough that he is home from the hospital.

Latest word is that he has not had another stroke. It was a seizure, so they are giving him anti-seizure meds, keeping him in the hospital for a couple of days, and waiting for a neurologist to look at and evaluate CAT scans. The seizure is likely to have been produced by artifacts of the stroke.

He has speech, though he is unhappy at being in the hospital—this is an entirely normal and healthy reaction to being in a hospital unexpectedly. Velma also reports him being somewhat drugged-drowsy from the seizure meds; this is, unfortunately, also normal, especially for the high dose that I infer the doctors have given Soren.

TNH just posted on Making Light that [livejournal.com profile] baldanders may be having another stroke. And she wanted the word spread, so I am.

We wait, and hope. I will update as I know more.

ETA: 7:52: They’re at New York Methodist Hospital.

NY Methodist is good; that's where Soren was last year.

ETA 9:27 pm: Elise reports "Update: just heard he's lucid and bitching mightily about wanting to go home. This is a VERY good sign, I am told. Also, Velma says everybody should get some sleep."

A bunch of you know my friend Soren, aka Scraps, and know that he is recovering from a stroke. While he is doing a lot better than he was six months ago, he isn't well enough to work. He's getting Medicaid, and not much beyond that in the way of benefits.

I am therefore putting on my costume as a trustee of the Scraps Reassembly Trust, and posting a Paypal donation button. The trust is for legal purposes, so the donations go for Soren's life expenses rather than to replace the Medicaid money; it's not a charity in any official sense, nor is it tax-deductible. If you're a friend of his and want to help out, cool. If not, also cool: it's not as though you don't have other good things to do with your money.

I'm posting this once and once only; whether or not you give, there will be no follow-up letters. Nor is this a pledge drive, so no tote bags or other free gifts. (OK, if you really want a tote bag, I have a few extras, the only trick being finding a suitable free weekend for you to come pick one up. This offer is not dependent on whether you donate, to this or anything else; is not valid outside the Solar System; and will not be repeated unless someone takes me up on it.)

As of a few weeks ago, I am a trustee of the Scraps Reassembly Trust. Trustee is both a very grown-up sort of thing to be, and one that isn't on the standard "things that you will do/have happen at some point," good, bad, or indifferent: people expect, sooner or later, to graduate from one or more schools, to get jobs, to lose people we care about, to fall in love, to deal with landlords and/or mortgages, to have bank accounts. This isn't even the standard "I'm in a lawyer's office and it's not a crisis": I did that some while back, making a will. Many people will tell you that everyone should make a will; nobody will tell you that everyone should become a trustee. (It isn't a strenuous thing to do, at least not in this case: someone else made most of the phone calls, though when we finally got to the lawyer's office, we pointed out a detail of how we wanted the trust to work; the lawyer pulled out a boilerplate paragraph and instructed his secretary to type it; and when he handed copies around to us, I looked at it and pointed out where she'd dropped a line. My fellow trustee, [livejournal.com profile] pnh, noted that this is what I do for a living. [Not so much these days, but I have a lot of proofreading experience, including fairly recently.] As we walked out, the friend who was acting as "grantor" said "Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Trustee." Then we got to do similar things a few days later, at a bank, bearing signed originals of the trust paperwork.

This is a "supplemental needs trust" to pay some expenses for our friend Soren de Selby, a.k.a. Scraps, a.k.a. [livejournal.com profile] baldanders, who had a stroke last year. (The money was donated by a large number of his friends.) Our job as trustees is to look at possible expenditures, confirm that they are appropriate, and spend the money, while it lasts.

We also have the ability to deposit money in the trust's bank account, in case of any future fund-raising. There are no plans for such, and this post is not intended as a solicitation; it's partly because I want to talk a little about becoming a trustee, and partly to update those of you who know Soren. Patrick has set up a paypal account (as soren.trust@gmail.com), which will be able to take donations, should anyone feel inclined. In the course of that, I had a brief, friendly telephone call with him a couple of days ago, one of the very few things that we really couldn't do by email, namely sharing the password. I'll post an update when Patrick confirms that the paypal is working properly; he'll also be posting to Making Light. (If by some odd chance you both want to donate and don't want to or can't use paypal, ping me, or Patrick if you prefer: it's a bank account, we can deposit checks.)

(Expository lump: Scraps had been working as a freelance copyeditor. It's not an especially well-paying gig, and comes with no health insurance or other benefits. Fortunately, "medicaid is pending" was sufficient to get necessary treatment at the time, and the coverage has now gone from pending to approved, so at least basic medical stuff will be paid for. Scraps is doing much better than he was a few months ago, but there's still a ways to go on the road to recovery.)

[personal to grantor: I have left your name out of this in case you preferred that, but would be happy to put it in.]

redbird: closeup of me drinking tea, in a friend's kitchen (Default)
( Feb. 23rd, 2009 08:22 pm)
Yesterday afternoon, I visited [livejournal.com profile] roadnotes for a few hours. We caught up a bit, and discussed her plans for tidying, culling things, and moving to a new ground-floor apartment. [livejournal.com profile] coyotegoth was there for part of my visit, and was more practically helpful (he did dishes). I would have liked more time with just her, but this was good. Late afternoon, [livejournal.com profile] fimbrethil and Howard dropped [livejournal.com profile] baldanders off after having lunch together and hanging out. It was good to see him walking a bit, albeit slowly and with a cane. He saw the new apartment, and we discovered that the wheelchair he's currently using won't fit through one doorway. They then went to a bar, and I looked at the time and the state of the [livejournal.com profile] redbird and headed home instead. (I could have managed about 20 minutes at Quarter, which probably wouldn't have been time to do more than taste one of the complex cocktails Roadnotes has been telling me about, or possibly discuss options but not even get to taste anything. I don't like most alcoholic drinks, so I'm less disappointed by this than many people would be.)

After work today, I went down to the Village for coffee, tea, and chocolate. I walked into the chocolate shop and said hi, and Marc Varsano looked up from the back and said "ginger in three minutes." I got some ginger and some other things, and passed on the good news about Baldanders.

(Work continues apace; more glitches on the current book, so I've asked and gotten a day's extension on my deadline for editing the manuscript, but nothing horrible.)

I spent this afternoon with Soren ([livejournal.com profile] baldanders), first at the inpatient rehab center and then, with [livejournal.com profile] fimbrethil and Howard, at a bar and Mexican restaurant called Ellis, which is Soren's local. (They had driven in from Queens, so we could go beyond the neighborhood of the rehab place.)

Soren is somewhat bored, of course. Among other things, there are no therapy sessions on weekends, so he has even less to do than on weekdays. He was quite a bit more cheerful at Ellis than in the rehab center: no surprise there.

I did one useful thing in addition to general conversation and being another friendly face (and providing some variety among those faces): we were talking about reading, and I asked how he was doing with the newspaper. Atlantis hadn't been supplying one. It took some back-and-forth and at least half an hour, but they got him a copy of the Sunday News. They also put him on newspaper distribution list, and he should now get the New York Times every day. I don't know why nobody had asked him about, or offered, a newspaper before this, but he'll have it from now on, if they don't drop the ball again. And if they do, we now know there is a list, and [livejournal.com profile] roadnotes can remind them that he should be on it.

The people at Ellis are nice, but are really bad at tea: the water not only wasn't boiling, I strongly suspect it had never reached even a temperature sufficient for green tea. [livejournal.com profile] cattitude kindly made me a cup when I got home: a little later than I normally have tea, but I needed the caffeine, being well behind my normal caffeine levels for that hour

Talleyrand is said to have told his ministers not to act on their first impulses, because first impulses are always generous.

Like Kate Fansler, I am not in the French (or any) government. I may be spending Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn with [livejournal.com profile] baldanders, who just posted to Making Light asking if someone wanted to come out there then and give him a break.

Yes, Soren is posting again.

Good news, reposting from [livejournal.com profile] fimbrethil:

Independence in the wheelchair has come at last to Soren. Sunday [1/4] saw him wheeling himself out of the room with his one good foot several times. I noticed that at 3:00 when the shift changed, he went out to the desk to say hello. He was in excellent spirits, his speech has improved again and he's darned spoiled by all his outings for the holidays. When we walked in, we were greeted with the battle cry of "Applebees, Applebees, Applebees!" The restaurant is pretty much across the street and is wheelchair accessible and Soren really wanted to go out with us. Unfortunately we couldn't that day but I think he got out later in the day with Velma and another visitor. Soren was very animated and it seems his brain is running faster than his ability to speak. When he slows down and speaks carefully, the words comes out easier. But it's hard for him to slow down, I think. However, he has a lot more words than he did when we saw him last and he is able to string them together better than he did.

Velma has asked me to pass on a request.

Please email her before going to visit Soren. It's not that he doesn't want company, because he does. It's that they also want some time alone, with something resembling privacy, and that's very hard for him to get at the rehab facility. Knowing ahead of time who's going to be visiting will help a lot.

Also, please be flexible if at all possible: there might be good reason for you to come Friday instead of Thursday or vice versa. (This part of the request is mine, not hers, so if it seems unreasonable, take it up with me, not Velma.)

( Dec. 4th, 2008 09:40 pm)
Email from Velma earlier today:

Soren's been accepted to Atlantis Rehabilitation and Residential Health Care Facility -- http://atlantisrehab.net/direction.htm, 140 St. Edward's Street, Brooklyn NY  11201; 718-858-6400.

It looks like he'll be moved tomorrow morning. [Tomorrow in this context means Friday Dec. 5].

The hope is that he can move to one of the places that were higher on their list when they have room; as far as I know, there is nothing wrong with this place, but the first choice is four blocks from her office and she got a good feeling about it when she walked in to take a look.
