The Scintillation Discord Server includes, among other things, a book club, on a drop-in basis, with the book choices posted well in advance. Today's book was Naomi Kritzer's Liberty's Daughter, which I liked, and read recently enough that I didn't need to reread it as preparation.

It was a good discussion, including some nuanced discussions of the politics, not just "Libertarians are bad" (nobody in that group is going to pull a No True Libertarians argument), but how some of the characters dealt with the particular shape of bad that they were living with. The other big topic was parenting, and how good/bad Beck's father's approach was for her.

I had fun, and hope to attend more of these, but will have to read, or reread, the books in question first.

I've skipped some past discussions because of audio/headset problems with my PC, and also procrastinating on moving over to my new Mac, but I opened a window in Safari and used the built-in speaker and microphone, and it worked well. Being able to pick up my machine, take it wherever, and do video chat is a significant part of why I decided to get a laptop.

We got home from Scintillation, a small SF/fantasy convention in Montreal, yesterday afternoon. I enjoyed the con, but it took a lot out of me, and I'm not sure I enjoyed myself enough to be worth how draining it was (that's separate from the financial cost, three round-trip airfares and four nights in a hotel). If I go next year, I suspect I should either travel Thursday instead of Friday, or leave Sunday afternoon/evening rather than staying over Sunday night. The longer trip let us go to the pre-con and after-con picnics, plus Friday afternoon expeditions, and as much of the programming as we wanted.

I enjoyed some programming, and some unorganized socializing in the convention's public spaces. I skipped some programming, either because it was less interesting to me (e.g. discussions of writing techniqques) or to save energy. I got a ride to the Marche Jean Talon expedition on Friday from [personal profile] rushthatspeaks, and a ride to the Sunday evening picnic from Ruthanna. I didn't feel up to walking to Marche Jean Talon, and then walking around at the market; similarly, I didn't feel up to taking the metro to the Sunday evening picnic. (We did take a bus and the metro back from the picnic to the hotel Sunday night.)

We went to Frites Alors! with Tamara for lunch on Sunday, because I wanted poutine, and they have food Adrian likes (although not poutine, because it's full of cheese). By Monday, when we were grabbing something to eat on the way to the airport, I felt like I had eaten too much meat (in the form of dumplings) and just got a cucumber salad. We took the metro to get to the branch of Frites Alors! that has a (seasonal) patio; the convention hotel is in Chinatown, and most of the outdoor dining options near the hotel mean getting takeout and finding a park bench. That said, I'm glad that there's still at least one con that has some outdoor events, and requires masking indoors with a couple of exceptions.

[I may post more, but wanted to get at least this down before I forgot.]

I tried a sea buckthorn drink this evening, because it was on the table at the post-Scintillation picnic. My immediate thought was that it was odd, so i took another sip to figure out whether I liked it.

I did, enough that i finished the cup, one small sip at a time, and went back for more.

It’s sour, but not acidic like citrus. I don’t think I would want to drink it quickly if I was hot or thirsty.

I probably won’t look for more, in part because Cattitude didn’t like it, and Adrian didn’t want to try it. I am glad I tried it.

My gift in this year's Scintillation Groundhog Day gift exchange is a pair of teal socks, which feel like wool. It came with no signature or note, just the name of the company it's from. I checked with [personal profile] ambyr, and the anonymity was accidental. I will follow up with the gifter to verify that the socks are made of wool.

They feel thick, and thus suited for cold winter days, of which we do still get a few.

In the other direction, I sent my recipient a Sandra Boynton T-shirt and post-it notes. I had them shipped directly from Zazzle, with notes saying "1/2" and "2/2" because the t-shirts and stationery are printed in different places.
Since we're not eating indoors in restaurants, the three of us had a few meals of takeout food sitting on a bench or at a little table on/near de la Gaucheterie, near the Scintillation hotel. We also managed two meals of the duck rillette I bought at Marche Jean Talon on the Friday afternoonL with a baguette as dinner that night, and a bit as breakfast before checking out on Monday. [personal profile] carbonel recommended that I go there while we were comparing out purchases, and I have thanked her, because it was good. (I got two small packages of duck rillettes from the refrigerator section, which we ate Friday night and Monday morning, plus shelf-stable jars of duck rillettes and duck creton, which are now in our pantry.)

All those quick meals of dumplings and such meant I had almost no fruit or vegetables for a few days. I've been making up for that, some, including with the first local strawberries of the season: [personal profile] adrian_turtle bought a quart at the Davis Square Farmers Market yesterday, which I finished as part of my breakfast this morning, and [personal profile] cattitude got another quart of strawberries at the Brookline farmers market today.

Tonight we will be having falafel, in pita Adrian picked up in Watertown, and there's a jar of taramasalata for later.

Since Adrian wasn't home for lunch yesterday or today, Cattitude made cheese sandwiches for lunch yesterday, and at his request I made a cheese omelet today, with a little red pepper left from last night's pasta salad.

We had poutine for lunch today because David Levine suggested it, and it was good. He and I both try to have poutine at least once per visit to Montreal, and this weekend has been mostly dumplings

On this week's Scintillation Maritime Noon, I talked about my trip to Hong Kong, back in 1997.

Scintillation Maritime Noon is a very local version of a weekly radio program, on which the hosts talk to people about a wide variety of topics. I gather that while some of the guests are people the host knows, and invites, others just happen to be in the building at the right time and willing to talk about model railroads, or jigsaw puzzles, or chocolate cookies, or hats, or...

So I spent 15 minutes talking a bit about how I decided to go to Hong Kong in 1997, and some of the things Lise and I did there, and when I handed the mic over to Arete for their segment, I realized that I could cheerfully have spent 15 minutes talking about a different set of things I did in Hong Kong. A pleasant amble down, or near, memory lane.

Very local in this case means that it's on a Discord server, and this week there were 16 people in the voice channel, including the host and three guests. On the other hand, we were in (among other places) Boston, Montreal, Toronto, and Chicago.

The CBC program is at noon Atlantic time. Our version is at 8 p.m. Mondays (Montreal time), which is noon somewhere, but that somewhere is mostly a lot of open ocean.

I just made a hotel reservation for Scintillation (a small book-focused con in Montreal), for myself, [personal profile] adrian_turtle, and [personal profile] cattitude.

I haven't been to a convention since well before the pandemic. I was hoping to go to last year's Scintillation. but we were moving that month, and no way could I have handled both.

Planning to go this time is definitely optimistic. Scintillation's covid policies are very good, but we do have to travel there and back.
