Yesterday morning a man knocked on our neighbor's door, then approached me and [livejournal.com profile] cattitude and started asking about our utility meters. When we said they were inside he said "they" would need access to the basement. We put him off, both because I was suspicious and because we were on our way out and wanted to be on the Bikeway, not in the basement. I was suspicious in part because the man was wearing a "Liberty Utilities" badge, and we get natural gas from National Grid and electricity from Eversource. There are at least two US companies called "Liberty Utilities," and one of them even serves a few places in Massachusetts, but not Arlington or any of the adjacent cities or towns.

When we talked about it later, I thought the man had been asking about the electricity, but Cattitude, who talked to him more than I did, said it was gas, so National Grid. I called them this morning, and they said they weren’t subcontracting with Liberty Utilities, and weren't doing any work in my neighborhood, or anywhere in Arlington.

I then called Liberty Utilities, who confirmed that they have nobody working in Arlington, since they don’t provide service here.

So: I have confirmed that this was some sort of scam, either to try to learn our billing information (so he could con us into switching providers), or to get into the building. I had asked the Arlington email list for information, so I posted my conclusions there.

This evening, I looked at the National Hurricane Center's charts of current Atlantic and Eastern Pacific storms, and then followed a link on hurricane preparedness. Along with "make sure you have enough insurance" and suggestions of how much food and water to store, they advise looking up your hurricane evacuation zone.

It turns out that I live in zone B, and zone A (higher risk) starts on the other side of the street. It's a complicated map, which led us to speculating on the history of Mass Ave (the shape of the map, with a long strip where the land right at Mass Ave is not in an evacuation zone, but a block or two away is, strongly suggests that it's slightly higher ground). The risk here is clearly flooding from rainfall rather than storm surge: not just because we're inland a bit, but because of how closely the evacuation zones hug Spy Pond and parts of the Mystic Lakes.

I opened the phone bill this morning and found dubious charges from two companies I'd never heard of. Which also apparently managed to slip them in last month in such a way that they weren't on the bill I'd received and paid, but were now listed as past due.

I called Verizon and the automated message started with a warning that, because of a "work stoppage" (apparently they're afraid of the word "strike") there were fewer agents available. Nonetheless, when, after going through bits of the phone tree and not finding a specific right choice, I said "agent" they put me through to someone in less than a minute. Someone who wanted to chat about the weather and such, in between helping me and making an attempt to sell me their internet service, but he did in fact help me.

The agent calmly said that yes, he would reverse both this month and last month's crammed charges, and put an anti-cramming block on my account. I thought I'd had one on years ago, but apparently it vanished; be that as it may, it will be blocked again as of tomorrow. I also have a confirmation number for the reversed charges: NY00113355109.

Under the circumstances, I asked him to check that my long distance provider hadn't been changed (there should be a block on that as well), and he confirmed that. So I thanked him, said he'd been very helpful (they say they may record calls, in which case that might benefit him), and hung up.

Then I went to my bank's website and paid the phone bill, for the amount without the bogus charges. I usually pay bills on Saturday, but we just picked up yesterday's mail this morning, and I decided to get this over with rather than wait, which I am now glad of.
Remember that weird email asking me to send my resume for an unspecified job, where we talked about what business they might really be in, off in glamorous eastern Iowa? (If not, I'll wait while you read it.)

Well, I'm in the middle of an argument (I don't think we've hit the "flame war" stage--I hope not) with someone on alt.poly who signs himself Mad_Macz [sic]. And somewhere in there, he said enough about where his alleged wealth comes from that I said something like "So you're the person who sent me anonymous email about a job at what looked like an escort service?!" He got miffed, and asked why I thought that; I explained. In the course of all this, he went on about how I had no idea what rich people might need--but he also said that "Callidus Ventures" had started as a "mercenary support" company.

I've observed that, if so, I can see why they'd choose to be vague even at the expense of people thinking they're running an escort service: after all, the latter is legal in some places, though not in their apparent headquarters in glamorous rural Iowa. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

I posted to alt.poly earlier today, asking for good job vibes. Basically, asking for moral support.

I've gotten a bit of that.

I also got email that (minus headers) says

Their Web page, at

is so vague as to what business they're in that I half-suspect they don't know, and about one-third suspect that it's not quite licit. "We Also Walk Dogs", or an escort service? Either way, why no name for the person who sent the email? And where is area code 319?

(I don't need the Latin translated.)
