Nethack is a rather complex game, and the developers have paid attention to all sorts of details. For example, there are potions (and other causes) of hallucination, which cause the monsters to keep changing apparent form. They also change other messages: something that might normally give you a strange feeling produces a normal feeling, and instead of hearing a cash register you hear Nieman and Marcus arguing.
I just got the message "You hear someone say 'No more woodchucks!'" It took me a moment to get it. It's the oracle.
