OK, that's maybe a little too cute.

This morning, I was surprised Google was just displaying their usual logo. But OK, it's their site, and they tend to quixotic choices.

I've been using the built-in calculator today, so I've been there quite a bit. A few minutes ago, I noticed they had put up this logo, with the extremely cute letter l.

First thought, you're running late. Second thought, maybe not. Sure enough: they put it up at, or very close to, the to-the-minute anniversary of the moon landing.

Why not? We're that sort of geeks, right?

In a discussion on [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll's journal, the quote "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture" came up, with the attribution to Frank Zappa and, I think, observation that it's hard to track down where/whether Zappa said it. A quick Google got me a discussion of who said it first, which comes to no firm conclusion, but eliminates some possibilities (e.g., some people credit Laurie Anderson, but she says she got it from Steve Martin) and includes an email from someone who decided to try dancing about architecture. At an open mic.
I am in love with the Web tonight, and with Google which brings me so much of it.

I was online earlier, reading about astronomy, and suddenly found myself wondering what the genitive of "lupus" is [1]. We have a Latin dictionary, but [livejournal.com profile] julian_tiger was sitting in my lap and I didn't want to disturb him. So I typed "genitive lupus" (without the quote marks) into the Google search bar. The first result was exactly what I wanted, telling me that the genitive is "lupi" and citing Wikipedia. Below that I was offered an assortment of astronomical sites talking about things in the constellation Lupus.

It's little surprise that a system that answers that quickly and accurately has "about 49,700" hits for "Gimli Manitoba" (with the quote marks; without them, "about 245,000," which I suspect include some people talking about Tolkien).

[1] Yes, I know, -us, -i. But not always: it might have been fourth declension or something else weird.

Google maps claims to have about 19,800 results for the location "thought of this while waiting for an A train".

Bear in mind that a couple of weeks ago I gave it "Earth" and it couldn't find a match.
