Last night, we had Indian food delivered: lamb rogan josh, aloo paratha (potato-stuffed bread), and papadum (lentil wafers). There's a moderate amount of butter in the first two, so I took a lactaid tablet before dinner, and I was fine.

This afternoon I tried the next experiment: a moderate-sized serving of ginger ice cream, no lactaid. And no symptoms whatsoever.

I think I'm going to proceed with caution for a bit longer (notably in terms of keeping track of things), and will have to be careful of ingredients, especially with Indian food, but if it's a sensitivity to something in yogurt rather than to either lactose or milk proteins, it won't be hard to handle.

(I am currently well-supplied with cold cuts for breakfast.)

Having talked this over a little with [livejournal.com profile] cattitude, and thinking about something [livejournal.com profile] adrian_turtle pointed out, it's also possible that there's something specific to yogurt that my system is having problems with, rather than either lactose or milk proteins. This would still be a nuisance, but giving up yogurt is far less of a change than giving up yogurt, milk, ice cream, butter, et cetera.

I made oatmeal for lunch today, for myself and [livejournal.com profile] cattitude. Since I'm avoiding dairy a little longer, and didn't like soy milk in my hot chocolate, I just did without.

Oatmeal with plenty of maple syrup, cinnamon, and dried fruit (cherries and blueberries) is a fine thing. I think it stayed slightly chewier than with milk or cream. I like it a little better with the dairy, but not on a level of feeling deprived, more the way that I prefer peach pie to apple, though both are good.

I'm trying doing without dairy for a few days. Mostly this means eating cold meat or fish for breakfast, instead of yogurt, and having tea with sugar instead of milk and sugar (and a little cool water to avoid burning my mouth). But I bought some soy milk, and just tried making hot chocolate with it.

I poured it down the sink after about three sips. Ah, well. There's plenty of other chocolate in the house.
