redbird: closeup photo of an apricot (food)

I made oatmeal for lunch today, for myself and [livejournal.com profile] cattitude. Since I'm avoiding dairy a little longer, and didn't like soy milk in my hot chocolate, I just did without.

Oatmeal with plenty of maple syrup, cinnamon, and dried fruit (cherries and blueberries) is a fine thing. I think it stayed slightly chewier than with milk or cream. I like it a little better with the dairy, but not on a level of feeling deprived, more the way that I prefer peach pie to apple, though both are good.

Oatmeal with peaches .. Oh, my.

Yes, I use 'home-made oat milk' for muesli and porridge ... that is to say, I let the oats do their thing with the water I put on :-)

One thing I used to do with hot cereal (though more the coarsely-cut multigrain style than oatmeal) is cook it with a finely-diced apple in one part apple juice to two parts water, and then add cinnamon and sugar.

Yeah, this was just for a nice hot apple-y dish that didn't include dairy, if that kind of thing sounded appealing.

I use the rolled oats all the time for cookies.

That's pretty close to what I have in the morning. I let the baby crockpot and a lamp timer make the steel-cut oatmeal overnight and then I put maple sugar and either dried cherries or dried blueberries in it, except when blueberries are fresh and then I use those. I've never really liked milk or cream with my oatmeal.
