[I was going to post about this anyhow, and it just turned into a comment to [livejournal.com profile] ozarque]

Monday afternoon, [livejournal.com profile] adrian_turtle and I walked out of a second-hand clothing shop Monday, most of the way through browsing (she's found blouses and such there before), because all of a sudden the owner was playing nasty right-wing talk radio, attacking Sen. Clinton and gays in a way that seemed equally nasty to both, and out of the blue. (Out of the blue in the sense that she hadn't done anything in particular in the last day or two, it was just part of their background agenda; it wasn't clear whether the goal was more "see how horrible these gay people are, they support Clinton" or "see how horrible Clinton is, she takes money from gay people.") It was some comfort, two blocks later, to see the headline in a newspaper box "Mitt vs Mass": yes, the state governor was attacking same-sex marriage again, but the paper wasn't using it to snipe at us or saying he was right, but saying that he was attacking his home state in order to pander to the national GOP. Small victories.

adopted home state. Fucking carpet-bagger. I'll be so glad to see the back of him.

Nor was I. (I've now lived in the greater Camberville area for 9 years..)

I see carpet-bagging as moving someplace purely for personal gain at the expense of the place you move. I haven't looked up historical uses in a while and don't remember if I'm alone in this usage...

(Someday I hope to actually meet Adrian. :)
