I've been happily using an AIM ID and now the pre-Alpha LJ chat facility via their Jabber client. I'm using the GAIM client.

It now transpires my mother has a Yahoo chat account, which my brother set up to use for her. I'm generally not thrilled with the whole Yahoo interface/ID et cetera. Does anyone here have good, or bad, experiences with it?

In particular, do you know offhand whether I can add it to my GAIM client, rather than using a separate client?

(I'm not going to ask Mom to add an AIM ID; if this looks unappealing, we'll stick to email and the telephone.)

Addendum: I dug out my Yahoo ID, downloaded Yahoo Messenger, used it long enough to add my mother's userid there, and made contact through GAIM. Mom said Hello, expressed surprise that it had worked, and went to bed (time zone differences).

Yes, you can use Yahoo via gAIM. I have been doing so with no problems. You have to interact with Yahoo directly to create an ID, but once you have that, gAIM is vastly superior to working through the official Yahoo system. You can also log in to several services at once (eg Yahoo, AIM and Jabber) through gAIM.

My mother is just starting to get into IM (and incidentally email). Since she is severely to profoundly deaf and can't manage the phone, I think this is going to be a godsend. Hooray for technology.

By the way, since it's on topic here, would it be ok to talk to you on LJ Jabber if I see you online? I hesitate to just ping you on the grounds that I know LJ friends were auto-added so simply being on your contact list doesn't tell me you'd actually want to chat to me. Obviously at any given moment you might not be available, but in general would you be interested to chat occasionally?

From my viewpont sitting behind Trillian, there is almost no difference at all between AIM and Y!

Yes, Y! works with GAIM.

I personally don't like either AIM or Yahoo. I guess once an MSN user always an MSN user! Then again that's probably because i hardly know anyone on AIM. I would however try to avoid yahoo especially if i'm trying to talk to my mom, she isn't the best with the old interfaces. Actually i probably didn't provide any useful info there at all. Sorry!
