Doing our taxes has been more than usually painful this year.

I don't just mean that we owe the government money, because we do. The painful part has been repeatedly getting to something and saying either "that looks wrong, where's my mistake?" or "my numbers don't match [livejournal.com profile] cattitude's, what's wrong here?" The answers to the latter have ranged from a probable keying error on the calculator, to reading only half of a poorly worded instruction, to the bit where both of us got significantly wrong sums because, where we needed to add A+B+C, on the first tries I produced A+C and he produced B+C.

Somewhere in there I decided it was necessary to run in circles, scream, and shout. When it came to it, down in the park, I ran in a couple of circles, shouted "Yaar!!" once, and did not scream. Then I came back inside and took all my clothes off, so I won't do that again, because it disturbs innocent passers-by.

I think my part of this is done. The plan now is for him to look at them again in a day or two, ink everything, and then we sign it and send it off, with checks for what we owe.

Next year, I buy tax software.

In the meantime (because the current I-hope-correct-this-time numbers have us owing a significant amount, rather than about breaking even), I think I'll hold off on buying more Ray Troll t-shirts.

You might want to look at http://www.turbotaxweb.com - I've been using it for the last several years, and have been quite happy with it. I don't know how well it deals with self-employment - I've never had to worry about that.

I used to used TurboTax, but switched to HRBlock.com's web-based software a few years back -- TurboTax didn't like Opera that year, though I believe they work fine together now; I haven't switched because now HRBlock has my previous-year data stored, making my life just a bit easier, come tax time. Both are good packages, for my use, but I don't know about self-emplyment.

Yeah, having my previous year's data is one very strong incentive to keep using their software!

It kind of dealt with having to file amended tax returns - which is to say, it did fine with the Fed, but got the State amended return form all wrong - we ended up having to fill that one out by hand. Given how it failed, it should pull the right 'last year's data' for next year, but I will take a closer look than I have previous years.
