I read the new Harry Potter over the weekend.

I don't think it's a spoiler to note that what I liked best about it was the Peruvian darkness powder. Also, the ending hits reader and characters alike over the head with The Message.

Now, I'm going back to rereading Greg Egan.

I will be reading [livejournal.com profile] zorinth's copy at some point, ut the first thought that Peruvian darkness powder brings to my mind is how much nicer it would make Villa Wellington to sprinkle a little of that around so that it was not so bright.

What I liked best about it was that it was funny. The first 4 books had an awful lot of moments where I thought "that line is supposed to be funny. Ewww." _Order of the Phoenix_ didn't seem to be trying for humor in the same, and I was relieved. _Half Blood Prince_ didn't have funny lines on every page, but the funny lines really had me roaring with laughter.

I think it's easy to lose site of the fact that the first four books were written for children. They are very funny to a person at the cognitive level of a child. #5 and #6 were aimed at teens, more sophisticted humor. The amazing thing about HP is that although they are dead-on age appropriate, there's also enough there for adults (which flies right over the heads of the wee ones). Sorry, I work in children's and young adult literature, just had the urge to comment here. :)

I'm so excited that you've read it! I don't know *anyone* who's read it, other than me who's read it twice. Feel free to email me if you want to chat about it with spoilers.
