redbird: me with purple hair (purple)

I may have jury duty starting Monday. (I'll find out tomorrow late afternoon or evening, I hope--conceivably not until the weekend.) I have decidedly mixed feelings about this: Chinatown and less travel, but also much less money.

I'm wondering whether hair in an obviously non-natural color would reduce my chances of being picked for a jury (actually being on a jury could take more time than I can afford right now). Opinions and especially experiences solicited.

Oh, go for non-natural hair color, and wear something that shows the tats to best advantage. You can do jury duty when you've got a job that pays jury duty pay. No sense taking a financial hit.

I got out of it by sharing my opinion that the local cops of lying scum. (Or at least folks willing to plant drug evidence on teens and questioning teens without reading them their Miranda rights.) If you like your local cops, this may not be an option.

My experience is that every case is different, every lawyer is looking for a different jury makeup, and courts vary in the reasons they will allow jurors to be excused or dismissed. I'm a lawyer and a crime victim, so I went in fully expecting to be dismissed, and instead was seated on a civil jury that also included a local cop. So I'm not sure you can predict what will get you dismissed (other than lying about knowing one of the parties, which is perjury).

Can't help you there -- the only time in my life I've actually gotten called in to a courtroom, I told them I thought I was the wrong person for the case, and got dismissed. This case involved a car accident that had happened years before on a dark rainy night, with the two drivers the only witnesses, and I as a non-driver felt that they'd be better off with jurors who had actual experience driving under those conditions.

You could try this - tell them, "I am aware of the Fully Informed Jury Act and wholly support it."

Look it up at http://www.fija.org/

Rumor has it this will get you dismissed from service so fast your head will spin.
