My right shoulder has been sore for the last couple of days--in ways that lead me to think that it's mostly overuse at the computer, but that's a side issue here--but I hadn't been to the gym since last Thursday, and didn't do cardio then. So, despite being up late again last night, I got up and headed out with
cattitude, planning on a workout that emphasized lower-body stuff.
The cardio went fine. And then my right calf cramped badly on the first weight machine. I tend to push myself to that point on the calf machine, which isn't good, because it's not predictable and therefore I can't figure out when to stop--but usually it goes away as soon as I stop. This time it hurt a lot: rather than being able to stretch a little and fix it, I couldn't find a comfortable angle for the leg, and did nothing but sit there for a bit. That muscle needed quite a bit of coddling. [In fact, several hours and lots of gentle walking around later, it's still tender.] Okay, right shoulder and right leg off-limits, that didn't leave much. I did what seemed plausible, stretched, and went down to Chinatown for an early lunch and some shopping.
I had to go up to Grand Street to find tangerines of a kind I like (these were New Year's tangerines, and I got a dozen, because they're probably my last of the season). Being there anyway, I decided to head east and stop in at Kossar's for bialys. I ate the first tangerine before I'd gotten home--the pharmacist commented on the smell of citrus--and the first bialy with a cup of tea as soon as the kettle boiled. I've also made a batch of apple cakelings, and a batch of chocolate-ginger.
Cardio, 33 minutes, top heart rate 145
Calf machine, 70 pounds, 13 (stopped at mild cramp, yes in the right leg, and did what I usually do, which is reduce the weight).
65 pounds, 15, 11--and that's where it hurt a lot. Sense suggests dropping the weight to 60 or less next time, and doing lots of reps.
Tricep pulldown, 40 pounds, 15; 50 pounds, 12; 40 pounds, 15 (This is upper body but the shoulder moves little if at all).
Seated leg curl, left leg only, 40 pounds, 15
Wrist curl, 30 pounds, 3 sets of 15
Crunches, 4 sets of 20
Lift with physio ball, 3 sets of 16
(No tree--standing on one leg seemed imprudent)
