redbird: closeup of me drinking tea, in a friend's kitchen (Default)

I spent most of this afternoon with [livejournal.com profile] livredor, who is delightful company. We wandered around the Museum of Natural History, looking at dinosaurs, extinct mammals, and so on, and had a fine time, despite the docent who insisted on pointing things out despite our lack of interest in talking to him. (Another docent responded very well to my question "I thought they'd found a second species of coelacanth", and admitted that the sign was out of date.) I also got to show off the glass invertebrates, and see the refurbished Hall of Ocean Life, complete with life-size model blue whale. We also discovered that scallops not only use jet propulsion, they hop on their edges: "Clams got legs!"

By then I was in serious need of a cup of tea, so we went back to the apartment that Livredor and her friend Jen are borrowing, had tea, and talked for another couple of hours, then went out and had kosher pizza (with mushrooms, fresh garlic, and fried onions).

[livejournal.com profile] rysmiel, thank you for introducing us.

The morning I'd spent at the gym, then invited myself downtown to eat some of [livejournal.com profile] eleanor's macaroni and cheese.

Oh, I'm very glad that worked - I had been thinking you might get on well together. Though there's a mild wist of envy in there at the fact that I see no way I'm likely to meet [livejournal.com profile] livredor in person until next summer. Distance can be really annoying sometimes.

Oh, is it all your fault? The picture I'd been painted was that [livejournal.com profile] redbird contacted [livejournal.com profile] livredor completely out of the blue purely on the basis of having read her blog. You having been in the background pulling strings makes much more sense.

PS: <waves> Hello [livejournal.com profile] redbird. :o)

Re: New friend

See, the confusion was due to a big gaping hole in my logic. When you friended me I assumed [livejournal.com profile] rysmiel had pointed you in my direction, but then when you said you didn't know who I was, I counted that for evidence against my initial theory. Cos it didn't occur to me that Rysmiel might well introduce me to you without explaining how we know eachother. I should have worked this out, knowing how discreet Rysmiel is about such things.

It's just not the kind of thing I do; I introduce people by saying, this is so-and-so whom I know from such-and-such a social context, and by the way, I think you might have this third acquaintance (or interest, failing that) in common. But this works just as well as my way (and might indeed be preferable where privacy is an issue).

Are your predictions always that spot on? Thanks for your prompting anyway, I appreciate!

While I have every intention of trying to find a way to be in the same place as you at some point, I have to confess I have absolutely no idea where I'll be next summer, either short term or long term. Then again, I may yet find myself sufficiently convinced by your pro-Canada propaganda to at least think of spending some time somewhere vaguely near you in order to investigate possibilities.

Distance can be really annoying sometimes
Tell me about it! I now have my close friends scattered through four continents, but I've been angry with geography for a long time before things got to this pass. Grr.

I've been grumpy about the changes the AMNH has been making over the last few years, but I have to admit that the refurbished Hall of Ocean Life has a certain amount going for it. Though the giant flatscreen TVs showing loops of pretty but uninformative stuff just irritates me.

(And they seem to have gotten rid of that little room just off the war canoe room with all the shells! Aiee!)

Wow, thanks!

(I'm planning to post at some point saying what good company you are, but it might take a while to get round to it, given how many posts are in my head and how little time I'm likely to have for LJ in the next several weeks.)

Anyway, yeah, thanks for a brilliant afternoon, and I echo your vote of thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rysmiel to whatever extent Rysmiel was involved in bringing about this excellent meeting.
