more unpacking progress

We continue to make progress on unpacking and related things.

First, I got cattitude to put shims under my front of desk, so the file drawer no longer slides open whenever it isn't actively being held closed. That's something we noted a month ago that we would need to do, but other things took priority.

Shimming the desk let me move an empty cardboard box that had been holding the desk drawer closed. That in turn gives me access to a dresser drawer, and I am rearranging some of my clothes in ways that I hope will work better, with less risk of forgetting where certain things are, or even that they exist. Not so incidentally, moving some of my t-shirts freed some non-drawer storage in that dresser, and my plans for that space may get me back some useful storage in our bedroom. (Cattitude and I now have one shared dresser in our bedroom, and one in the study. He often wakes up before I do, so while I want most of my clothes in the bedroom, it's also useful to have some in a room where grabbing them won't wake him.)

I cant recall just how long it took us to get rid of all the cardboard boxes but at least a local moving company was glad to have them,

The cardboard boxes are proving easy: every so often Adrian goes to a queer Boston "buy nothing" group and looks for people who have asked for boxes, and contacts someone. "Every so often" being as they pile up, not on a schedule. A couple of times they piled up enough that we bundled some for the weekly recycling pickup.

I'm keeping that white cardboard box for a little while, until I'm sure I don't need it to hold the file drawer closed. Also, I asked cattitude not to discard the most recent subscription snack delivery box when he has finished the snacks, because it may be a useful size to hold some non-clothing miscellany like foreign currency, old passports, and my Seattle area transit and library cards. I plan to keep using the Seattle and King County cards as long as they will let me borrow ebooks from the comfort of my desk, but will probably never walk into those libraries again. I suspect that the ORCA card, or the value theron, has expired, since I haven't used it since 2016, but when we lived there they were charging $5 for those cards, so I don't want to just throw it away. (Montreal also charges. Boston's are free, but you have to find an MBTA employee who has them.)

I believe that particular white cardboard box came from my lab in Troy. In 1998. It's not just the size and sturdiness, but the way the lid flips up is very convenient.

I love this general sense of expanding possibilities in the sliding square puzzle that is this apartment.
