Having been awakened early by a thunderstorm, I got to the "trustflow" algorithm when it wasn't overly busy.

As seems to be standard, I've got a mix of people whose names I recognize (and in some cases share LJ communities with) and complete strangers; no maintenance-type communities, because I have them all on my friends list already.

Interesting. A remarkable number of those not on your friends list are on my friends list - an overlap I haven't noticed before when other people on my friends list have used the tool. I think fandom is responsible in this instance... but I'm not saying anything about [livejournal.com profile] bigdaddyfluff.

Did you understand how the algorithm worked? I didn't, and I tried.

"Trust" is an odd name for it, if only because it winds up telling all my friends that they should trust things like lj_maintenance

Well, shouldn't they? :-D

It's a search of an arbitrarily connected potentially cyclical digraph, finding the nodes you are statistically most likely to reach first from a given node on a random traversal. It could be implemented much more efficiently via coloring.

That makes sense.

For LJ, this would mean that the person who is most often on the Friend's List of my Friends is on the top of his list. Right?

Exactly, though when you get down a few levels and start having friend*s who can be reached by paths of different lengths it starts to become interesting.

"Trust" does seem to be a strange thing to call it.

Yes. I understand it.

And "trust" does seem to be a misnomer. But it is a weird kind of handshaking distance.

My god, if you don't understand it what hope have we poor mortals?!

There have been discussions all over LJ about how the algorithm works, with much scratching of heads. I am considering starting the Journal of Probabilistic Bucket Related Results..

The above explanation makes a lot of sense. I assume he calculates the values using probabilities, and doesn't run a Monte Carlo simulation.

PS YET another result on my Freinds list's Trust Metrics list for Livejardin. Who is actually a MEMBER of the damn thing that we know? (apart from[livejournal.com profile] fragrantzodiack?

(You are the most garden-y so far with what looks like suggestions for 4 gardening communities?)
