Because we have some money to spare, and neither a car nor driving licenses, [personal profile] cattitude and I placed a large delivery order with Instacart this evening, for delivery tomorrow afternoon.

Almost all of it is things we will use, buying them now rather than next week, month, or possibly season: the next bottles of things like dish soap, vinegar, and olive oil that we will use, and not in the "it will come in handy sometime" way. We did add a few things we don't normally buy that are likely to be useful if we're stuck at home because of a quarantine, or for that matter a blizzard (it's Feb. 29th and this is New England), like frozen orange juice, frozen peas, and a half dozen cans of condensed soup.

We're paying for the convenience, of course: a dollar extra on this item, and 75 cents on that, adds up; but our time and energy are worth something.

I also made sure we are well supplied with spices, to add some variety if we wind up eating lots of rice and beans.

There have been times I would have hesitated to do this, for lack of either spare cash or storage space; right now we're okay on both.

ETA: We are stashing extra paper towels and toilet paper on the (enclosed but unheated) porch.

Just did the same thing here. Storage space is a bit tight, but we'll manage.

I've been thinking a lot about how to make rice and beans palatable over the long run. I already had spices of various kinds, but I got some red and green enchilada sauce, salsa, instant soup mixes known to be tasty (as seasoning, not to be made into soup), some canned diced green chiles, and kimchi and regular sauerkraut. Also walnuts and jarred roasted red peppers for walnut sauce, and peanuts for fried rice. I keep thinking I have forgotten something, but possibly not.

I haven't gotten canned soup yet but it's a good idea.

I'm coming to your house!

(though you remind me that my prepper partner may not have actually gotten this far on all that and I should perhaps inquire)

(and how is a certain necklace? *grin*)

I usually cook with a lot of fresh ingredients, so there's bound to be a learning curve. But I'm hopeful. I indulged in a tube of pureed ginger, too, though normally it's so expensive compared to the root that I don't buy it. Ginger root keeps fairly well, but it's in extremely short supply right now.

The necklace is happy. The shirt I got to show it off has grown old and sprung some holes, so I need to find it something else to shine on.

I should grab loo rolls, and we'll be chronically short on perishable things (cream, etc.) but otherwise we're good to go right now for a quarantine.

I'm heading to the store in a little bit. Our canned goods shelf has run low lately. Bad timing.

We started doing this back in December, thinking it would be for the flu. Getting a little bit extra every week-we're up to 10 days' extra on food at this point. Toothpaste, contact solution, paper goods, soap--all the staples we're up to 3 weeks. I just added a couple of things I thought of: shower wipes to carry around (to wash our hands with), and a new thermometer (my only one was from when my kids were little, more than 20 years old, and was mercury in a glass tube).

a quarantine would be an exciting opportunity to find out exactly what is in the back of the downstairs freezer......
