I have started gardening here, by planting lettuce. We went over to Pemberton Farms (which is part garden/plant shop and part grocery, and easily reachable by bus from here), browsed a while, and came home with two six-packs of lettuce plants and one pot of thyme.
The lettuces are now in the ground: I put half of them out front, near the daffodils, and the other half in a bed on the side of the house. I pulled a bunch of other plants out of the bed to make room, mostly something with small white flowers on tall stems. I also noticed even more violets in bloom, next to the daffodils in front of the house.
What we really want to grow is herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, and maybe corn, but this store didn't have cucumber or tomato plants.
We may go back for marigolds, hanging plants for inside the house, or more herbs. I will be stopping in for groceries now and then: their selection includes local apples and a wide variety of bread, and it's handy on my way back from Davis Square by bus.
