Meta: in discussion with
rysmiel, I came to the conclusion that I ought to be writing--here, on paper, or both--about more of the quotidian stuff, so I'll have a record of it later. I will try to be kind about cut-tagging. (I could use an opt-in filter, but that excludes anyone not on LJ or DW.)
Work: At the moment, I am doing a "cold read" on a math book. That means, after the editor has been through the manuscript, reading for anything that seems odd, as well as for typos/copyediting level stuff. I'm also creating an answer key, which means I get to do all the exercises. This is seventh grade, which is fine; second grade, a couple of weeks ago, was irritating, too much "count the boxes" and such. This is worthwhile because I do catch stuff: the more eyes the better. After this, there's a lull in my usual work for either science or math (cold reads are part of my usual work), so I'm going to be copyediting a math book.
It feels a little odd to be moving back in that direction, but the company has a chronic shortage of copyeditors who are able or willing to work on math. Sure, in a sense they're overpaying me for this, but the shape of our year is such that it's easy for me to feel as though I'm being overpaid for July and August. I figure it's like schoolteachers whose paychecks are sent throughout the year even if they aren't teaching in the summer. If we're being overpaid for July, we're underpaid for the busy part of the year. It works out.
