Could people please include some useful description or labels when you post links. Not just "I agree with some but not all of his points" or "so-and-so makes sense". Take the extra moment to say "I agree with some but not all of his points about labeling and sexual orientation" or "so-and-so makes sense about $specified_topic_or_event".

At least, do that if you care whether I read the articles you're linking to.

I sometimes think it's better when I don't listen to myself too closely. At least when I'm talking to [livejournal.com profile] julian_tiger.

My fruitcake arrived! It has fancy silver dots on top. I am being sensible and saving it for after supper: it looks and smells like the kind of fine rich dessert that would leave little room for lamb and rice. Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] browngirl.

The little plastic things to slip on dangly earrings so they don't fall out have also arrived, with a very nice note from [livejournal.com profile] elisem, whose handwriting on a bad day is as good as mine gets most days. Thank you! Now I can wear those fine Swarovski crystal danglies. I emailed [livejournal.com profile] papersky earlier today, to confirm that the plans for while I'm visiting don't involve anything I need to dress up for--but I will probably take some nice earrings, just because I can. I got these at Minicon, and haven't had the chance to enjoy them because I was worried they'd fall out. Now I can. Also, fancy earrings, unlike much fancy clothing, don't leave me cold or pocketless, and are no more effort than simple earrings (and not much more than no earrings at all).

Of course, having commented to [livejournal.com profile] laurel that my Weblog entries tend to be brief, more pointers than discussions, I wrote two long entries today. Well, long for me, at least. (I seem perfectly happy to call the activity "blogging", but I've been doing it long enough that I still want the noun to be "Weblog" or even, as in my acronym, "Web Log"--"blog" is an alcoholic fruit punch with dry ice fog floating over it.)

I just wrote a difficult note.

Not difficult because of anything I've done, or not done. It's an "I'm thinking of you" to a friend who is most likely dying. We aren't and never were incredibly close--that would be a different kind of difficult. But after I posted a cheerful/encouraging message on the Web site her friends are maintaining to keep people informed of how she's doing, I got email from one of her sisters, urging me to get in touch with her soon, while I can.

It's hard to know what to say, when what you want to say is "I miss you, and I'm sorry there won't be a chance for us to catch up and get to know each other better." I did my best--I said I'm thinking of her, and a bit about seeing her at Orycons, and her fine nephew. I used a pretty card, and added stickers to the envelope, to maybe supplement the words I'd had trouble finding.

That'll go out with tomorrow's mail pickup, and I hope it will make its way west in time for my friend to read it, and maybe be lifted a bit thereby. If modern medical science can't do much more for her, neither can I, not from this distance: but words and affection are not empty.
