redbird: closeup of me drinking tea, in a friend's kitchen (Default)
( Jan. 23rd, 2004 10:32 am)
I have sent a copy of my resume, with a cover letter that emphasizes my familiarity with ACM (the resume makes that pretty clear, of course), to Alda.

Now I wait. And maybe have more tea, though I've had three mugs already this morning. But the sore throat has stopped being sore, so that's all right, even if I'm considering spending the day in my bathrobe.

Should I respond to someone who posted to the COPYEDITING-L list looking for a "woman feminist" editor for a vague project, or should I stick to my feminist principles and not answer an ad that discriminates on the grounds of gender?

I just spoke to Alda—as far as I can tell, she called as soon as she saw my email and had the phone number (which she could have gotten from Carol, but never mind), without even looking at my resume. The work seems plausible, and it seems likely that I'll get it.

Basically, they'd be emailing me PDFs, for me to fax back (which means going to the friendly stationery shop over on Broadway). There would be some tight deadlines, and if I get this, I'll tell them when I [know I] will be unavailable (travel, in particular). There might also be some copyediting work in the future, depending on their workload and whether their regular copyeditor is available.

Alda's boss is out today, but she said I'd hear back next week, after she talks to him, and there might be work very soon.

That was fast: Alda just called to say that she spoke to her boss, and they'll be sending me the first files to work on either this afternoon or Monday.

I've given her my mobile phone number, in case she needs to reach me when I'm not at home all day. We discussed practicalities of invoicing: simplest for them is to bundle all the work on a given issue into one invoice, with a note that if I do something that's pipeline for a future issue, it can be invoiced for now. She gets the invoices and passes them straight to her boss, who gives them to Marcia, and I know Marcia is efficient.

[livejournal.com profile] wilfulcait has pointed out that this new freelance gig means I should buy a cheap fax machine. I'm looking for advice on what to buy--and what not to buy.

I don't care much about supply cost: I expect to be using it (almost) exclusively for outgoing faxes, not incoming. Small is good, because I have no clear idea of where I can put the silly thing.
