redbird: close-up of a smiling woman wearing a hat (hay)

This is from [livejournal.com profile] elisem's haiku earring party.

Comfortable vices

Sin was too difficult
for them, so they gossipped
and drank stolen tea.

The earrings in question have shiny brown beads.

The astute reader will note that the syllable pattern on this is 6-6-5; the 5-7-5 version isn't as good. You may insert a hyphen and line break before the c in "difficult" if it pleases you. The astute reader may also note that the word "gossipped" looks funny.

Sitting on the Union terrace with [livejournal.com profile] truepenny and a friend of hers whose name I keep forgetting Sunday evening was enough fun that Truepenny and her husband and I went back Monday afternoon. I had more chocolate chip orange custard, and we watched the waves and talked about looking at water, about eye problems, about stuff in general. We'd had to cut Sunday's sit short in order to get back for the GoH speeches and Tiptree ceremony. Carol Emshwiller's speech was mostly autobiographical, and very good. China Miéville improvised on matters of aesthetics and politics, with many quotes; I understand thinking-by-juxtaposing-quotes, but it didn't hang together as well. And I don't have the lyrics to Ellen Klages's "Johnny's Been Writing Prose Again" filk that we sang for John Kessel Sunday night.

Soaked very thoroughly in the jacuzzi with several people late Monday as a sort of intermission in the dead dog party.

I moved rooms twice, for reasons to do with saving money, since my main roommate, [livejournal.com profile] tanac, wasn't arriving until Friday. Elisabeth Vonarburg invited me to share her room Thursday night, and thanked me for giving her more book money. And sharing with [livejournal.com profile] juliebata Monday night was both sociable and convenient--I hadn't wanted to be across from the con suite when everything was going on, but it was handy for ducking in and out when the dead dog moved up there.

Note to self: don't buy pies at the Farmer's Market, you don't eat them right away, and by the time you're packing to go home, they get fuzzy. Pastry for breakfast, sure--but after that the Tiptree Bake Sale is going to keep me well supplied with tasty sweets.

The LJ party was good fun, and I even got to explain LJ to a few people, and offered codes. One said he might want one for his daughter, which is cool: a fellow Tiptree juror's daughter is not a random stranger.

I have both my membership and my room reservation for next year. We spent a little time being confused about the dates, which are May 28-31, 2004: several of us thought that the Memorial Day (observed) algorithm was fourth Monday in May, rather than final Monday. In fact, I'm still feeling vaguely dissatisfied, but I'll worry about it later.

I got home earlier than expected, because I asked to stand by for the earlier Detroit–New York flight, and this time that trick worked. (On the way out, they told me the earlier flight to Madison was too full.) Wiscon was wonderful, of course, but it's good to be home with [livejournal.com profile] cattitude, not just talking to him on the phone.

The travel charger for my Palm doubles as a night-light, because it glows green while it's charging.

Having Internet access at the con was pleasant and occasionally even useful. Before the Earthsea panel, I printed out the notes-to-myself I'd posted here last week (and then didn't use them because the discussion went in other directions, which was fine).

I'm actually a day ahead here; this replaces a previous entry, and leaves me with items through tomorrow.

redbird: closeup of me drinking tea, in a friend's kitchen (Default)
( May. 27th, 2003 09:19 pm)
The hotel's exercise room was small, and emphasized cardio equipment, which I wasn't in the mood for on Friday. They had one of those several-in-one exercise machines hotels like to buy, which do several things badly. I did a set and a half of more-or-less bench presses, but the equipment was odd and I wound up with it set at 20 (I assume pounds) instead of my usual 50 or so. Three sets of lat pulldowns at 50 pounds, which is fine. There was a tolerable mat, so I did my standard four sets of 20 crunches and three sets of 15 back arches. Then I did bicep curls, one hand at a time, using a 15-pound weight. Three sets of 15 on each side. Lateral raises, 5 pounds each hand, 2 sets of 15. (All this is from memory, and numbers may be inaccurate.)

Yesterday afternoon, at the end of the con but before the dead dog had started, I was sitting on the floor talking to a few friends, and wound up lying on my back. And then I did about 30 crunches, just because. Which is weird, if good.
