I don't need all those signs and reminders that we'll never forget. Forgetting isn't the problem around here.

So, since I don't have a television (a blessing once in a while) and didn't want to go to any kind of organized-by-strangers memorial, I did my best to have a normal day.

Since it's Wednesday, that mostly meant going to the gym, then meeting Andy afterwards for a picnic in Madison Square Park, and picking up some fruit at the Union Square Greenmarket.

I've had better workouts )

My A train skipped Columbus Circle on the way home because of "a police investigation": the only people on either platform were the men who run the newsstands and several police officers. I overheard someone (in TA garb) at 42nd saying that this would continue through the rush hour, but NY1 has nothing about it on their Web site. 42nd-125th is a long run without stopping, for a subway not going under a river, but we didn't get up to speed until we hit the usual fast run north of 59th.

Herein I correct the BBC, just to be polite:

Cruithne is very cool, but it's not a moon. The people who figured out what it's doing are very clear on this, but the BBC messed up, and lots of people are now quoting their error.

Cruithne doesn't orbit Earth--it orbits the Sun, doing weird horseshoes around Earth's orbit. This is one of the weirder known solutions to the three-body problem, one spotted mathematically long before it was observed out there in the real world. Now that they know what to look for, they've found two more asteroids in similar resonant orbits, but haven't published details yet.

See http://www.astro.queensu.ca/~wiegert/3753/3753.html for more information.
