redbird: closeup of me drinking tea, in a friend's kitchen (Default)

It's not a great photo, but it'll do for the moment, for any readers who haven't met me (all two of you).

Think about your metaphors! (That's a grumble about work: when someone says that "there are ideas presented that could be part of a grist mill of requirements engineering," he clearly didn't think about the meaning, which leaves Yr. Ed. with a harder task than it should be.)

Having tired of pouring boiling water over my hand while making tea, this morning I reached into a mug of hot tea to pull the teabag out. No harm done, I think, but not a brilliant move. (The problem with PG Tips, from this viewpoint, is that they don't have little strings attached that can dangle outside the cup. It's good tea, though.)

It's too hot, but you knew that. Or are reading this six months later, and can't begin to imagine what a heat index of 105 felt like.

Micro$oft has just started running subway ads, urging companies to register--that is, pay large sums of money for--software. One of the lines they're using is something like "How content are your employees?" with the idea that unhappy employees will report you for software piracy.

I don't know if all the software here is registered. And I don't care. Apathy is one thing, doing a Huge Conglomerate's work for free is another. If everything is for sale--the apparent ethos of 21st-century corporatism--why do they expect people to help them for free? The people who believe in giving things away aren't the ones most likely to get upset about software licenses.

I am, of course, underestimating the motivating power of anger--but they may be overestimating it. If you're furious at your boss, is "I'll get the accountants angry with him" your first thought? On the other hand, better that than attacking random cow-orkers, which is what gets "disgruntled" into headlines.

Where can I go to be re-gruntled?
