When I canceled last Thursday's training session, Emilie asked if I'd like an extra this week to make up for it, and I told her I'd have to think about it (depending on how I felt). As of this morning, I wasn't sure I was going to the gym: [livejournal.com profile] cattitude and I decided to go get lunch, and then I'd either get on the train downtown, or not, depending on how I felt.

Not only did I feel good enough to go to the gym, but when I got there, I ran into Emilie in the locker room, and when I asked, it turned out she had a slot open in a few minutes if I wanted it. I said yes and did a little warm-up first:

7 minutes of cardio (top heart rate 136, I think), rolled out the IT band and other fascia, and a set of hamstring bridges (4x9). I'd asked her to have them leave one of the Pilates machines out (she'd done a demo class a little earlier), figuring we'd do a little of that and then go over to the trainer area and do some of my usual stuff.

Instead, we spent almost the entire hour on the Pilates machine. Emilie noted that this was a lot more than I'd done before, and that I was successfully and cheerfully doing things that I'd either had trouble with, or not been willing and able to do at all, a few months ago. She says my legs are significantly stronger, which is nice to hear: and rebuilding strength is part of the point of what we're doing, in general. There were also a number of things that were at least partly aimed at balance (including the less-obvious stuff about how I hold my pelvis and keeping my position symmetrical).

So, almost an hour of Pilates, lots for the legs but also a bit of arm and back stuff (including a variant on biceps curls, a movement that reminded me of the pulldowns I do that are mostly for my back, and rowing), and then off the machine and lying on the floor to do some ab work (small ball, 12, 12, 10).

So, that was a nice bonus on a day when I expected to be exercising on my own. (Side note: Emilie says she'll be taking six weeks off after she gives birth, so I'll be on my own for March and most of April, if things go according to the predicted schedule).
