Another early apple from the Greenmarket this weekend, tucked into my bag this morning and eaten cold. This is a fairly small, squat (rather than spherical) green apple:

Crunchy, juicy, a little sour, with a crisp skin. It's not bad, and I might get it again, though I prefer my apples sweeter. I ate it down to the core, but that might be partly because it was almost lunchtime.

I'm still waiting for the Esopus Spitzenburgs.

(We have one more variety to try this week, Elstar, as well as a few more Vista Bellas, but this week's batch of vista bella are a bit mealier than the first ones we'd gotten. Odd: same harvest, same orchard.)

Do you think it might be a cooking apple?

I am totally charmed by the name Esopus Spitzenburg, which I had never encountered before. Also by this quote, found when I googled it.
One of the great American apple varieties, rumoured to be Thomas Jefferson's favourite apple. Noted for its spicy flavour, and for its susceptibility to any and every disease afflicting apples.

The traditional First Apple of the season here is the State Fair apple, which one can buy at.... yes, the State Fair.
