The NIH is collecting blood samples from volunteers, with the goal of quantifying the incidence of undetected coronavirus infections.

I have emailed them saying I want to participate, because it's something I can (probably) do, unlike most medical studies. It involves drawing a blood sample and sending it back to them in the mail (unless you live in Bethesda, MD, in which case they'd like you to come in and have them take the sample).

A lot of studies want healthy volunteers, or people not on any prescription drugs, which absolutely makes sense, and rules me out. This one is looking for people who are at least 18 years old, who haven't had COVID-19, and are comfortable taking a blood sample at home; that last probably rules out a lot of people.

It sounds like participants will get their test results, but not quickly. And you have to be okay with having the NIH store a sample of your blood.
In the last couple of days, I have found some information I may actually have a use for, while making notes that say things like "this might be useful, find more." I have also found such irrelevant nuggets as that Franklin Delano Roosevelt may not have had polio, but Guillain-Barre syndrome, and that the Rotary Clubs have a long connection with the United Nations.

Since I felt that I was still getting over having overdone things on Monday, I took it a bit easy at the gym, which meant I was done there sooner than usual.

After exercising, I walked down to the Pret a Manger on 42nd Street across from the main library. The sandwiches are okay, but the reason I go there is that I can count on them for an actual cup of hot black tea. I drank tea and ate turkey on a baguette, then went to the library. A couple of hours in the rather attractive reading room left me with no useful results beyond a couple of scribbled journal names to hunt for later. However, on the subway platform heading home, I got an idea, which proved fruitful once I was back in front of my machine and I could google. Results have been emailed to the client, who I hope will be satisfied. (As far as I can tell, the specific data they want either were never collected, or were never published in any useful/findable format.)

I cashed yesterday's unemployment check this morning, and today's mail contains another--the first was for the week I thought I might not be getting paid for, and this is the one for last week. (I'd been vaguely confused, thinking yesterday's check was for last week, and wondering why they hadn't taken out for the one day I reported doing freelance work. Now it all makes sense--and I have a bit more money.)

gym numbers )

Despite having taken it easy at the gym, I discarded two different tentative "I could run this errand" ideas in favor of heading straight home to my tea kettle after the library, because I realized I was standing on the sidewalk in front of the library, being fuzz-brained.

As I said, I'm not actually indexing this. If an item isn't in the first printing's index, I'm not adding it (few cases); if it's in there and in the atlas, it stays.

Approximate number of entries: 350 (I counted the entries in one column, and then multiplied by an estimate of total columns)
Number of entries without errors: 3
Number of entries deleted because the item isn't in the book: 2
Number of entries I have doubts about: 2 ("West Indies," not labeled on the relevant map, but they're there, and "Cabinda (Angola)," a small, disputed territory, but it's on the map, so we index it).
Unsurprising omission: Any label whatsoever on the colored blob that represents the occupied West Bank of the Jordan. I checked that after seeing "Cabinda" in the index and googling it.
