At work today, one of the copyeditors came over to me, carrying a huge folder, and said, roughly, "I have 229 Texas. It's your book. Is there anything you need to tell me about it?" I was startled for a moment, then pulled myself together and told her that there are a lot of illustrations, and don't worry that the art spec numbers are out of order, and told her to come to me with any questions.
This is utterly standard procedure at my office: the instruction sheet for copyeditors includes "must engage in a dialogue with the editor." The disconcert was that, every previous time I've had that conversation, I was the copyeditor with the big folder, asking whether there was anything I needed to know about the manuscript in question.
