Fine new magic smoke

The new machine has been assembled and tested; we're now in the process of booting from a Linux CD in order to pull all the data off my old hard drive and put it onto the fine new half-a-terabyte backup drive. Once that's done, we can take that drive off the cable, put the DVD drive back in the case, close it up, and then I get to install software.

The box itself is black and shiny; more to the point, the memory test went flawlessly, and this is going to be a fairly kick-ass system. ("Fairly" because we didn't splurge on high-end stuff I don't need or wouldn't use; for example, my graphics card is quite good, but better exist.)

I'll be intermittently online today, I think, and more intermittently over the weekend (the latter due to travel, not hardware issues). Email is probably good, but don't count on finding me on IM.

Are you running Linux on the new machine? If so, which distribution?

I'll be running Linux in a month or so, when someone releases a distribution that will handle my hardware: we hadn't realized this downside of getting the latest motherboard. At that point, it'll be a dual-boot system; I have clients who insist on Word, which doesn't run under Linux. (In a pinch, we could assemble a Linux from scratch, but I'd rather not, in part because one goal for this system is for me to learn more about Linux, starting with installing, and I'd rather do that with an existing distro, since my Unix admin skills are rusty.)
