I just commented to paidmembers asking bradfitz to translate his post into English, or if that was too difficult French or Spanish. SMS abbrevs are all very well in their place, I suppose—though I manage to convey the necessary information to adrian_turtle without them—but they're annoying when one doesn't actually have a 160-character limit. They're doubly so when, having so limited zirself, the poster is then sending me to a separate URL to find out what's actually being offered/promoted.

i thought that was amusing, but completely agree that a translation should have been provided in the same post.

they don't annoy me, mind you. if i used SMS, i'd probably use them quite easily; i even think it's fun to come up with new ones. but, i am a total luddite when it comes to actually using SMS. i've barely moved into the cellphone era. :)

Very. I suspect it helps that the only languages I could possibly have used it in, and thus the only ones I suggested, are fairly common in North America.

It looks (when one follows all the way through the series of links) as though they're pushing the idea of using it to do things like add friends and get comment notifications.

That system is completely unofficial and I believe it was set up by a user. LJ has always pretended to be unaware of it. Now LJ is releasing something that's run and supported by the site, and does have quite a lot more functionality if you're into that sort of thing.
