I'm feeling very low on energy this morning; walked with Andy in the park, but didn't head off to the gym when he did. So I'm sitting here, not sure what I want to do, feeling vaguely left out of, well, nothing in particular.

I want a well-paid, interesting, job doing something meaningful. I don't need to save the world: but if I edit things, I want them to be things someone will actually read.

There ought to be a write-up of Sousa's "The Glass Blowers" here, but for the moment what you're getting is that it's Gilbert and Sullivan meets the Spanish-American War, except without all the patter songs. Instead, there are familiar bits of march music: they're going along, resolving an operetta plot, and the orchestra is playing "Three Cheers for the Red White and Blue" ("a duck may be somebody's mother").

low energy and the job search

It might not be the same thing for you, but for me a period of low energy and restlessness (coughcoughdepressioncough) usually followed any big effort to get a job that I really wanted. I'd put a bunch of energy and activity into getting the application in, then have to sit around trying to be patient waiting for a response. Hard to escape thinking about how my resume and covering letter might be lost...

As it turns out, my apprehensions were justified for three or four jobs at Tufts University: in recent weeks I've seen several re-posted in e-mail with explicit instructions not to use the web-page submission mechanism. When I applied for those jobs, the web page was the only route allowed, and I never received any real acknowledgement that they'd reached anybody who cared. I'm pretty sure that the damn system was losing the resumes someplace.

But, I hasten to add, I actually got my current job through an ad in an on-line job site. I think it was monster.com.

I must say that Gilbert & Sullivan operetta without the patter songs seems as if it might be rather dull. March music might wake up the audience, but outside the context of a surge in US patriotism likely to be a bit of a dud.
