I have taken my podiatrist's advice and bought over-the-counter arch supports. These are Dr. Scholl's gel-filled ones. They sit against the heel of the shoe, and don't go all the way to the front. It feels, a few minutes after putting them in my shoes, as though I'm suddenly wearing half-inch heels: there's extra height from the heel through the arch, and then the front of my foot is at the same level it was this morning.

I won't know right away whether they're good, indifferent, or a Bad Idea. In the meantime, I'm saving the package and receipt, since the package offers a refund if I'm not completely satisfied.

If I need to claim the refund, I'll also be looking at other/different arch supports, and possibly custom orthotics.

I saw some of those in a shoe store and was put off by the price -- more than a lot of my shoes cost. Maybe there are good reasons for it, but I just couldn't imagine why mass-produced pads would cost so much.

I think it's the tech involved. My podiatrist insisted on them. They're unusual due to where the support is placed. It rests at the hinge between the heel and the rest of the foot. Using them is the best thing I ever did for my plantar fasciitis.
