We're having Spring, all of it, at the same time.

The lilacs are blooming down on Broadway (a few blocks away) and beginning up at the top of the hill in Inwood Hill Park. That's weird, but what's weirder is that I still have crocuses in front of the building, one of which opened for the first time yesterday.

Also violets and apples, in profusion--a good season for both. I was utterly delighted, so much so that Andy said "I didn't know you could get drunk on lilacs". He should know, though: I've done this before, just usually not on April 17, with forsythia still in bloom a few yards away.

Had it been ten degrees cooler, I might have enjoyed our prowl more, and been able to stay out longer: but had it been ten degrees cooler, the lilacs might have waited a little longer.

To complete the purple, the Pawlonia branches that the Parks Department cut down over the last couple of days (that tree grew out of a retaining wall) were starting to flower, also prematurely. I broke off a couple of pieces, brought them home, and have them in water. With any luck, if they produce roots, I'll figure out someplace to plant them: this is a shade tree that will grow to fifty feet, I'm not sure it would be a good idea to put it in front of the building, even if it would tolerate the shade there. (I suspect the tree will grow back: we've seen it do so once before, and our handy Audubon guide says that vigorous shoots with enormous leaves can be produced by pruning back almost to the base.)
