I don't like the "navigation strip" they've introduced, but they've set it up so that it's hard to avoid. First, it defaults to "on," both as what the user sees and what her journal or community displays.

More annoying, the only way to avoid the navigation strip is to uncheck "always see the navigation strip" under "viewing options" and never to look at any community or journal that has "always display the navigation strip" turned on. There's no option for "never see the navigation strip." So if you haven't bothered to fiddle with those options, or if you happen to like the navigation strip and left them both turned on, and I go to comment on your journal, the navigation strip appears at the top of the comments page.

There may well be value to the navigation strip. I don't see the value in overriding a user's "I don't want to see the navigation strip" choice.

I would phrase that, "click on 'configure/remove'" on the navigation strip, and de-select both options, including "[] Always show the navigation strip to anyone who views your journal or community"?

This complaint has been voiced several times, and ignored.
And it's interesting to me that that blank space in the middle is just the right size for a little banner ad....

I hadn't thought of the space being that size, but you're absolutely right. I do not like this.

I'm seriously narked at the forced navigation strip. Being unable to turn it off means I woke up to pages of b0rked communities with the stupid strip conflicting with layouts. If I could just turn it off I wouldn't mind, but LJ forcing it on users who hate the thing is just nuts.

I didn't mind seeing the navigation strip in other people's journals, because I figured it was as much their choice as any other aspect of their style/layout. But I got kind of frosted in the wee hours this morning when I started seeing it on my own journal and my friendspage despite having quite deliberately not having turned it on during the time they were advertising it at every login. Changing my style on me without asking? So not cool.

So this morning the strip bugs me a whole hell of a lot when I see it, because each time I wonder, "did this person choose to display the navigation strip, or have they just not noticed that it got turned on as a surprise?" instead of just seeing it as yet another layout choice some people have made.

They've moved me from neutral (there is some measure of convenience in it after all, even if not enough to make me want to sacrifice screen real estate or change how my journal looks) to hostile (now I do wish I had a "never show me the strip" option, which I'd never considered before), overnight.

I personally like the strip, but I chose to turn it on. I also won't turn on the "show it to people reading my LJ" because I want it to be up to them.

(I also tweaked the CSS generated in my custom style, because the default setup for the nav strip totally breaks Palm's Web Pro 2.0 in terms of readable display rendering....)

yeah, i like it too (saves me having 3 tabs open). and i am dead-set against being able to force it on other people, and have told 6A that.

I found the navigation strip useful since it is an easy way for me to login to my LJ when not at my home computer. But I can understand how it can annoy people, so I unchecked the option for others viewing my LJ. (It takes a few extra steps to login, but I'll look for a better shortcut.)

On a side note, I haven't gotten around to finding/creating/using a fancier style for my LJ, but sometimes I wish I can temporarily revert someone else's style to the default. Some of the styles out there are very difficult to read!

You can tag '?style=mine' on the end of the URL if you're logged in, which puts the page into your own style, but leaves the strip in place.

Pointer from a friend's locked post. I haven't tried it so I don't know if it works.

I agree. However, I did find it quickly became quite easy to ignore. I just hope it doesn't ever start blinking or animating!

Navigation strip

Actually, I hadn't even noticed it until you mentioned it. Huh. Well, it will make it easier to log out, rather than going back to a page with the logout option.

So far it hasn't bothered me.
