This afternoon, AIM offered me an "automatic update". I accepted, ignored it for a few hours, and then discovered I could no longer log in. I reset my password. No luck. I discovered that the help links are a mess of "coming soon," irrelevant FAQs, and nonexistent live help.

Next stop, Trillian. Which won't load my buddy list, and whose help pages are cheerfully willing to show me how to display a hidden list, which isn't my problem.

AOL's Web site says that the new version of AIM Triton doesn't overwrite the old. Well, not entirely, but I had to set Windows Explorer to hunt down the previous version. I am now logged in, and will celebrate by starting dinner.

I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but AIM is a Tool of the Devil. I like MSN Messenger or Google Talk or even Yahoo Messenger.

And if you try to delete AIM from your computer you'll find that it's hidden itself in various out of the way places, under different names, so it can rise again, like Freddie Kruger or something. It's truly monstrous. Good luck.

I don't use the AIM client, I tend to use gAIM (gaim.sourceforge.net) which is open source, free, and talks to AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Jabber, etc...

I totally second this reccommendation.

Along with it, I suggest the gaim-otr plugin, which will allow you to do encrypted chats in a painless fashion.

(If you ever switch to a Mac, go with AdiumX, which is based on the gaim engine.)
