I'm skipping the reunion. This is partly on account of my foot being tender, but only partly: if I'd had my heart set on hanging out with people at the Oyster Bar tonight, I'd have turned around in half a block, skipped the Greenmarket this morning, and saved the foot/energy for the evening.

I am thinking of dropping an email or two, of the form "Hi, I couldn't make it to the reunion because of prior commitments and minor medical annoyances, but I saw your name/email address, how are you doing these days?"

This has the advantage that if I do find myself wanting or needing to explain the shape of my life, I can do so more coherently than in a noisy bar full of people I haven't seen since before I met almost any of the people who are now central to my life.

I phoned it in last time. Various siblings and cousins got together when I was too busy and overdrawn, so I called and got to chat with several folks. I was later told that I'd had a better time than attendees.

I haven't been thrilled with the reunions I've been to. And today I received e-mail that someone wants to get together this summer since we've all turned 50. Bleah! Like I need a reminder how old I'm getting? I barely remember these people as it is -- why another get-together that's not a reunion?

I understand your decision, and probably the Oyster Bar would have been too loud and annying for you. But I think you would have definitely enjoyed going to the reunion, and not for any of the reasons you think you might have enjoyed it. The most amazing thing about the reunion is that you end up talking to people you never exchanged three words with over six years -- meeting them for the first time actually. And it's fascinatinly interesting.

Hunter is a surprising bond.
