This time, Zogby wanted to know if I would do various things if I could be sure of not getting caught; whether I had done said things; and whether I considered each to be cheating.

In each case, the available answers were yes, no, and "not sure/not applicable".

  • Hire an illegal alien?

  • Cheat on your taxes?

  • Cheat on your spouse or significant other?

  • Lie on your resume?

  • Lie on your expense report?

  • Use an inside stock tip?

  • Have an online relationship without telling your spouse or significant other? [The phrasing here, as distinct from above, suggests that they're looking for people who draw a distinction between doing this and an in-the-flesh relationship.]

  • Steal a business idea?

  • Lie on your child's college application?

  • Lie to the police to protect your kids? [Going back to the survey page to write this entry, I see I checked "yes" rather than "not sure/not applicable." Interesting.]

  • Leave the scene of an accident if you hit a parked car—WITHOUT leaving a note?

  • Keep quiet if you knew a friend had committed a crime?

For a change, they didn't ask about whether I'm a registered voter, my voting history, the size of city I live in, or whether I'm a NASCAR fan, though they did want to know my age, gender, and income.

They should have asked if you'd lie on a phone survey.

A lot of that is pretty meaningless without context, such as whether your friend's crime consists of smoking pot or shooting someone while robbing them. So I probably won't answer the survey this time, because I find questions like that irritating.

I am not on Zogby, but I am on the Harris Poll online. I think they send me surveys frequently because they need to get their 18-34 year old Hispanic/Lesbian/Midwesterner/SF Nerd demo down.
