[livejournal.com profile] cattitude and I found a fine Latin-American restaurant, mostly by luck. We were going to try the IHOP, and found that they had a line, which he didn't want to deal with. So we went across Broadway and into a place called Malecón, which had room and friendly bilingual staff. He had a Cuban sandwich; I had stewed oxtail, yellow rice, and red beans. The waitress asked if I wanted the lunch special, for $5.50, rather than the full $10.00 meal. I said sure--and am glad I did, both because it came with a couple of pieces of fried plantain and because I didn't manage to finish even this "smaller" serving. It was all quite tasty; he drank cafe con leche, I morir soñando, again both good. I like my morir soñando with cinnamon, which this didn't have, but that's one where preferences vary, and it was fine without.

(I'm writing this down largely so we won't forget; if anyone else is interested, it's on the east side of Broadway, about half a block north of W. 231st Street, in the Bronx.)

Malécon is indeed a very good Dominican restaurant. Rather, restaurants ... the Washington Heights branch is just a block from me, on Broadway and 175th. Huge portions of tasty food; there's a plate of leftover pernil with rice and beans waiting for me in the fridge at home.

The fact that you started out going to International House of Pancakes and ended up with oxtail stew is messing with my head.

Mind you, it sounds good.
