I got to the office this morning, did one quick proofreading thing--determined that the latest version of the list of cases had been sorted in an order that made no sense, one compared to which an ASCII sort will be a a beacon of clarity, so they're going to do that--and waited for Jim to get things set up so I could do boring Excel stuff. Half an hour later (either the network is really wonky, or Jim doesn't have a grasp on what he's doing. Or both), he had a machine set up.

Ouch. Bad monitor flicker. Instant headache. I did one item (not wanting to quit in mid-row), then explained to him that I couldn't do this, and he needed to either find me another machine to work at, or find someone else to do this project.

He asked me to wait until someone named Bob got to the office. Okay. You want to pay me to sit around, I'll sit around and make phone calls. So I have an appointment for a haircut tomorrow, and to have my teeth cleaned next week. No luck reaching the unemployment insurance robot, but that almost never works on Mondays.

Bob arrived, but had no help to offer: I'm not sure what he was supposed to do. Magically produce another monitor, maybe. So I noted the time, and left. Bank, Chinatown for duck congee, and home.

Andy says I might be able to resolve the problem in Windows, by setting it to a higher refresh rate. But I'll have to be back at the machine to know if it has that capacity. Or maybe the machine I used Friday will be available; it's not ideal, because of how high the monitor is, but it's acceptable.

I was too grumpy yesterday to write about seeing Lucy and John. Good company, good if overpriced food, and the Guggenheim looks very weird with the inside painted black.
