From the park, I have a nice view of the Harlem River. Most days, that means lots of water, maybe a few gulls or birds, small pleasure boats, and the Circle Line.
But there is still shipping. Yesterday afternoon, I walked over to the shoreline, and saw a barge, laden with old "redbird" subway cars. Twenty of them, sitting next to each other, all door and window glass removed, on their way to be dropped off the Maryland shore as an artificial reef.
I know they're old. I know they're being replaced by new cars, all metallic and shiny. But that's two 7 trains, being sent where they'll never round a curve or carry a commuter again.
I watched the barge head slowly along the river, under the Henry Hudson Bridge and out of sight.
