I've just spent several days of back-and-forth and leaving messages in order to discover that no, there are no trackballs available here at work.
I'm not surprised by the answer. I am a bit annoyed that this involved my finding a message this morning, explaining that they don't keep spare mouse balls around, and if there's a problem they'll just bring me a whole new mouse.

I pretty much never assume that I'll be able to get a trackball at work, instead usually just bringing in my own.
The logitech optical mouse I have from work now is sufficiently irritant-free (ie, I've never had it stick -- yay for lasers!) that I've never bothered to buy a trackball after my last one broke, but I've usually done well with a variety of logitech mousemen. My Current Home Trackball works quite qell, though.
I'm not sure quite why your IT department doesn't know what a trackball -is-, though.
