I bruised my right index finger badly some weeks ago.

Last Sunday, the damaged nail detached itself most of the way. I pasted it down with a band-aid, both because I didn't want to deal with it right before getting on an intercity bus, and because I thought there was almost no new nail there.

It's been getting looser, when not pasted down, since.

I just detached the last bit, and then rinsed the finger and patted it dry. To my pleasant surprise, there's a good deal more new nail there than I'd thought. There's not much exposed nailbed.

I have the cloth bandages [livejournal.com profile] papersky suggested, and will keep using them for a little while--but I no longer expect to use them up and need more. (I bought two boxes of 30, but that was mostly to have one home and one at work.)

Fingers heal at an amazing rate. I took off the top of my finger a few years ago in an accident. It was back within days and fully healed shortly after. Who knew how effective the body could be at self-repair?

Good luck with the nail. Sounds like self-repair is proceeding well and you are protecting it meanwhile.
