I inadvertently alarmed my beloved [livejournal.com profile] adrian_turtle with my last post, which was meant to be a throwaway on another community.

Life is not all skittles and beer (which is okay, as I don't actually like either): I have an odd tingly pain in my left hand, and I'm having trouble sleeping even until the alarm, and then tired during the day. If I were waking up early and not tired, that would be okay.

They still haven't told me where I'm being moved to, though as of last afternoon my boss seems to have arranged that it will be somewhere with a computer.

I seem to have another food sensitivity, again a minor one. A coworker brought in some fresh figs, and I ate one. Not quite as good as my first-ever fresh fig, picked up off the sidewalk just after it fell from the tree, still ripe. A few minutes later, my tongue was itching. It felt similar to the not-quite-ripe-kiwifruit reaction, and this fig may not have been ripe. Avoiding fresh figs won't be a great hardship: I went most of my life without them, and haven't craved them since trying them. Ah, well.

I get a baby kiwifruit thing - where you feel like the top level of cells in your mouth have been dissolved? It is an enzyme called papain which is also in fresh pineapple and papaya. It's used as a meat tenderiser and breaks down connective tissue - it's why you can't put fresh pineapple in jello, it won't set. Figs produce ficin, an enzyme with similar properties.

But apparently there is also a papain allergy, over and above the enzyme damage, and this can be triggered by many tropical fruits - can you eat bananas? and you may also be sensitive to latex or fig leaves on ornamental office plants.
